Young striker Chido Obi is one of the most promising players in Manchester United’s academy, but he has suffered a worrying injury during his recent appearances.
Manchester United’s prodigy Chido Obi suffered a worrying injury against Chelsea and was substituted after just seven minutes. The 18-year-old striker has been selected in the Under-21 squad to face Chelsea on Monday night.
But his night didn’t last long. He tried to chase down a clearance from Blues goalkeeper Max Merrick just seconds into the game and was hit in the head by the ball.
Obi received a lengthy warning from United’s club staff and was eventually replaced. He is well enough to leave the pitch and also had a brief conversation with interim Under-21 manager Adam Lawrence.
United will now carry out further tests on the youngster to ensure he has not suffered any lasting damage. The Under-21s next play against Southampton before returning to action against Birmingham on Friday night.

Obi will also be eligible to feature for United’s Under-18s in the FA Youth Cup against Sunderland on March 18. The FA’s concussion guidelines state that players can only return to action after six days, provided they pass a series of medical tests.
Obi joined the Red Devils from Premier League rivals Arsenal in September 2024 after a prolific spell in North London. He continued his impressive goalscoring rate at United, scoring 29 goals in various age groups since then.
He has been given the chance to play eight games for the first team, but is yet to score. Big things are expected from defender Lenny Yolo as he suggests he has the potential to become one of the best strikers in world football.

In an interview with Tipsbladet last season, the Frenchman said: “Chido has talent. If he continues to develop, he can become one of the best strikers in the world in my opinion. He scores a lot of goals and is a good kid, so I also hope he becomes one of the best strikers.”
“He had a chance in a few games. Of course, I hope he can achieve his goal in the first team soon. It will help the team.”
Meanwhile, United icon Wayne Rooney praised the young forward’s progress. After Obi featured in last season’s FA Cup game against Fulham, he said:
“Some of his chances were a bit naive but I think that’s really encouraging for Manchester United. Obviously Zirksee and Hoylund are not scoring goals.”
“Now that could be another option for the season. I’m really impressed with him.”
