Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United earlier this season after a disappointing spell as manager, and his departure was certainly a costly move for the Red Devils’ leadership.
Manchester United could end up paying close to £16m following their decision to sack Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese manager left Old Trafford in January after a disastrous spell at the club.
The former Sporting Lisbon manager led the Red Devils to their worst ever finish in the Premier League, and they also lost out in the Europa League final. The club’s misfortune continued this season, with club leaders opting to sack Amorim last month.
A statement at the time read: “Ruben Amorim has resigned from his position as head coach of Manchester United. Ruben will take over in November 2024 and led the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May.”
“Manchester United sit sixth in the Premier League and the club’s leaders have reluctantly decided that now is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity to finish top of the Premier League.”

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
And it has now become clear exactly how much United had to pay to cancel the remainder of his contract. According to the latest club reports, the Premier League side have already paid an immediate £6.3m amortization fee on the deal, meaning Amorim and his staff could be owed the equivalent of around £15.9m.
The report reads: “On January 5, 2026, the club announced that Ruben Amorim, together with a number of members of the coaching team, has resigned from his position as head coach of the men’s first team with immediate effect.

“An amortization charge of £6.3m of related intangible assets and a provision of £15.9m representing the maximum potential amount of future settlement payments are expected to be recognized in the income statement in the second half of the year to 30 June 2026.”
United had originally agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon £10m in compensation to sign Amorim, who replaced former manager Erik ten Hag on a three-and-a-half year deal. The Portuguese player has not yet spoken publicly about his dismissal.
United, on the other hand, relied on former midfielder Michael Carrick, who provided excellent command. He has won five of his opening six games and his side sit fourth in the table heading into this weekend’s clash with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
