Six Premier League teams continue to chase Champions League glory, now we know who they need to beat before lifting the trophy in May
Premier League teams remaining in the Champions League now have a clearer picture of their potential route to the final. Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham found out their last 16 opponents on Friday, giving us a hint of what will happen next.
Arsenal face Bayer Leverkusen, City face Real Madrid and Galatasaray, while Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid face Liverpool, Newcastle and Spurs next month. But the candidates are also stuck in a box.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Arne Slott’s Liverpool and Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea will be in one half, while the Gunners, Magpies and Lilywhites will be in the other half. The two teams will not face each other until the final.
If Arsenal beat Bayer Leverkusen, they could face Sporting or Bodo/Glimt in the quarter-finals. If Newcastle and Spurs advance, they could face each other at the same stage, with the possibility of them facing Arsenal in the semi-finals.
As a result, Mikel Arteta’s final four opponents will be either Newcastle, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid or Tottenham.

On the other side, as Chelsea’s reward for defeating PSG, they will face either Liverpool or Galatasaray.
Meanwhile, if City defeat Real Madrid, they will face either Bayern Munich or Atalanta. These teams will compete in the semifinals.
Manchester City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, believes Manchester City’s last-16 encounter will be like a final. “This is an important game for both teams,” he told UEFA.
“It’s going to be a really great game to watch because we’ve already played against each other in the group stage. It’s like a final and it’s great to be there again.”
“It’s too early to talk about the final. We have to think match by match. We now have a strong opening game.”
