Mohamed Salah has not scored in his last nine Premier League games, but Arne Slott believes the Egyptian superstar will soon be at his best in front of goal.
Arne Slott insists he is not concerned about the fact that Mohamed Salah is suffering the Premier League’s longest goal drought since joining Liverpool – because the attacker “will always score in the end”.
The Reds’ talisman has not found the back of the net in a league match since scoring in a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in November, but Salah has scored in nine consecutive games while representing Egypt at the African Cup of Nations.
Salah, Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, has never gone a long period without scoring in the league since moving to Anfield in 2017.
And Slott, who left the Egyptian star out of his starting XI at the start of the season, says the only reason Salah’s current lackluster form is under scrutiny is because of how consistently good he has been for the champions. “He sets standards for himself and those standards are very, very high and people are immediately surprised the moment he doesn’t score in a few games. That’s the biggest compliment for him,” the Dutchman said on Friday.

“You can use data to your advantage or against you, but you can’t use FA Cup games – when we play Premier League teams – there will be arguments about whether that’s fair or not. But that’s the way it works. If you want to highlight something really positive, you try to forget a game or two, and if you want to highlight something negative, you can try to forget a game or two as well.”
“Three games ago he had an assist and a goal against Brighton, a very good side in the Premier League. That’s the reality. Then you can change the data and say he hasn’t scored in nine Premier League games. That’s the standard he set for himself and that’s why people are surprised when something like that happens.”
Salah has struggled to reproduce the sensational form that led Liverpool to Premier League glory last year, but pointed out that Slott is not the only attacker struggling to find the back of the goal consistently.
He added: “We’re used to Mo scoring a lot of goals and that might be the biggest difference in his performance and game time at the moment. But we also know this has happened before. We don’t know if it’s happened nine games in a row. “But I’ve had these doubts before if he doesn’t score in three or five games, but I know that eventually he always starts scoring again. That’s his challenge and now we have to get him to start scoring again.”
“He is not the only attacker at the moment who is not scoring as many goals as we normally would. All eyes are on him for what he has done for the club, but Ugo (Ekitike) and Kodi (Gakpo) have also not scored as many goals as of late.
“It’s a team issue and we have to improve. The good thing is they don’t need to score as much because we’ve kept clean sheets. But against Qarabag they scored six and against Newcastle they scored four.”
