All six Premier League teams have qualified for the Champions League last 16, with Liverpool and Arsenal knowing their potential opponents ahead of Friday’s draw.
The Champions League last 16 line-up is starting to take shape, with four teams securing a place in the next stage of the competition. These include Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Bodo/Glimt and Premier League side Newcastle United.
The Magpies defeated Qarabag 3-2 on Tuesday night, winning 9-3 on aggregate after a resounding 6-1 win in the first leg. This means all six Premier League clubs who took part in this year’s tournament will be in the last 16, with two clubs potentially tied for next month’s match.
The improved format introduced last season sees teams matched based on the end of the league phase rather than a random draw. Mirror football currently looks like a draw:

Newcastle will be in one of the most difficult positions considering their opponents in the last 16 will be either Chelsea or Barcelona. The Magpies have won just once against Chelsea since 2012, suggesting they need a strong first-leg result to progress.
Eddie Howe’s side have already lost to Barcelona this season after being drawn in the league in the tournament. Arsenal also face difficult challenges against Bayern Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Atalanta, with the latter two teams due to play in Italy on Wednesday night.
The situation is similarly difficult for Liverpool, and by extension Tottenham, as potential opponents include Atlético, Galatasaray and Juventus. Atlético secured a place in the last 16 with victory over Club Brugge on Tuesday, but Galatasaray hold a 5-2 advantage heading into Wednesday’s second leg against Juventus.
Arne Slott’s side have already lost to Galatasaray this season, and although they beat Atletico in the league, the Spanish side have eliminated Liverpool at this stage of the 2019/20 campaign.
Champions League last 16 draw remains as it is
Arsenal or Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen or Borussia Dortmund/Atalanta. Liverpool or Tottenham vs Atletico Madrid or Galatasaray/Juventus. Chelsea or Barcelona vs Newcastle or PSG/Monaco. Manchester City or Sporting vs Bodo/Glimt or Real Madrid/Benfica.
All ties in the last 16 of the Champions League will be settled in Friday’s draw.
