Jamie Carragher names his top 10 goalkeepers in the Premier League and includes Edwin van der Sar – Manchester United legend disputes his position

Jamie Carragher could only criticize Edwin van der Sar and apologize in the Sky Sports studios after he dropped him from his top five all-time Premier League goalkeepers.

The former Manchester United No. 1 spent just over five years at Old Trafford, winning four titles and is regarded as one of the greatest shot-stoppers in the history of the top flight.

However, Carragher ranks him sixth on his list of all-time greats, ahead of fellow multiple league title winners Ederson and David Seaman.

Van der Sar looked at the list and quipped, “Jamie, I thought you made it into the top five!”

The former Liverpool defender insisted he was the better player, until he made a joke about not winning the league. “You were in the top five until you told me I hadn’t won the Premier League,” Carragher said. “What you did at Man United was absolutely amazing and I’m sorry but Gary Neville said it better than me. When you came in Man United started winning titles again and reached the Champions League final.”

Two other former United goalkeepers also feature on the list, with David de Gea, who was signed to replace Van der Sar, coming in fourth. Peter Schmeichel, considered by many to be the greatest goalkeeper in the Premier League, was moved to second place by Carragher.

Sky Sports pundits placed Thibaut Courtois fifth, with the Belgian winning two titles in just four years at Chelsea. Alisson was selected third, but former Chelsea number one Petr Cech became first. He played a key role in Jose Mourinho’s early dominance at Stamford Bridge, and the Czech international still holds the best defensive record in Premier League history.

Carragher said: “I couldn’t get Petr Cech’s performance out of my mind in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich. I was at the stadium that night and he held them off and won the game in that game. I played against him a lot. I used to go to games and think, ‘How am I going to get past him and score?'” It’s not just him, it’s the whole back four.

“That’s exactly how it felt. He was an outstanding goalkeeper. Chelsea were a really good team and spent a lot of money, but they didn’t start winning until he joined the club.”
