Manchester United are likely to bid farewell to goalkeeper Andre Onana this season after he was allowed to join Tavzonspor, but legendary former stopper Edwin van der Sar believes he should not be allowed to leave.
Edwin van der Sar is baffled by Andre Onana’s Manchester United problems and insists he remains a “horrible” goalkeeper. The Cameroonian endured a difficult few seasons at Old Trafford after joining from Inter Milan.
In the summer, he was allowed to leave the club to join Turkish club Trabzonspor. Although a permanent transfer is not an option, Onana is expected to be allowed to leave United sooner rather than later.
Despite passing his verdict, former goalkeeper Van der Sar remains baffled by the difficult period at the club he worked with Onana at Ajax. The Dutchman told Sky Bet: “I worked with Andre Onana at Ajax for three or four years.
“He came in as a third-choice goalkeeper and was very keen to step up and become first-choice. I thought and still think he had great qualities – reflexes and feet. But for some reason he has this weird mistake in him that makes you think, ‘That’s crazy, how could he do that?’
“Teams want stability and they want to know what the goalkeeper is doing so the back four can relate to it and I think that’s what happened with Andre.”

“Manchester United have been inconsistent for the last six or seven years. They’ve changed their back four, their centre-halves and midfielders have changed, their coach has changed. So it’s difficult for new players to come into an environment where they have high expectations, not only of goalkeepers but also of wingers and midfielders.
“A lot of the players that came here in the last eight or nine years weren’t at the level that people expected them to be.
“When he first came to United, I absolutely thought he would be successful. Like I said, I worked with him and watched him at Ajax. He did well in Italy and played in the Champions League final, so I thought it was a match made in heaven.”

Onana has played 21 games for Trabzonspor so far this season, keeping just four clean sheets. The club is in third place in the Turkish Super Lig, seven points behind current leaders Galatasaray.
Senne Lamence signed for United in the summer as Onana’s replacement and had an impressive debut season at Old Trafford.
