Referee Lewis Smith shows Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana a red card during the game against Brentford.

Chelsea released a statement after their 1-1 draw with Burnley in the Premier League, condemning the vile racist abuse of defender Wesley Fofana. The French defender received a second yellow card in the second half and was sent off.

The Blues had a good goal in hand when Joao Pedro scored in the first half and was sent off. However, the Clarets were given their marching orders to Fofana, with Jeanne Fleming scoring the equalizer in stoppage time.

The club has now released a statement condemning the abuse, revealing that Fofana had been subjected to racist abuse online.

In a statement, the club said: “Chelsea Football Club is appalled and disgusted by the vile racist abuse directed at Wesley Fofana online. The targeted racist abuse suffered by Wes after today’s Premier League match against Burnley is abhorrent and unacceptable.”

“Such behavior is completely unacceptable and goes against the values of the game and everything we stand for as a club. There is no place for racism.

“We unequivocally support Wes, he has our full support, and so do all of our players who are too often forced to endure this hatred just to do their jobs.

“We will work with relevant authorities and platforms to identify the culprits and take the strongest possible action.”

Fofana exposed the racist abuse directed at her on social media, sharing five stories of abuse on her Instagram Stories.

The Chelsea defender wrote: “In 2026, the situation will be the same, nothing will change. People like this will never be punished. We will launch a massive campaign against racism, but no one will actually do anything.”

The French defender has been blamed for Chelsea dropping points, forcing manager Liam Rosenior to reshuffle his squad.

The Blues head coach put Tosin Adarabioyo on the pitch in place of Cole Palmer in a bid to win.

Rosenior defended Fofana in his post-match press conference, saying: “It wasn’t Wesley’s fault, it was a problem with our performance. From the first goal we lacked decisiveness. We wanted to create wave after wave of attack. We were too safe in possession.”

This was not the only racist incident at the match, with opponents Burnley also releasing a statement condemning the racist abuse directed at Hannibal Mabry.

It’s been an unfortunate week for football and racist comments, with Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior allegedly the victim of racist comments during a Champions League game against Benfica.
