Manchester United midfielder Koby Mainu has found himself on the fringes during a difficult few months under former manager Ruben Amorim
Diogo Dalot has told Koby Mainu that staying frozen at Manchester United will make him a better and stronger footballer. Mainu almost left United to join Napoli on loan in last month’s transfer window.
The England midfielder was fed up with the way he was treated by former manager Ruben Amorim. Amorim refused to name Mainu for months, keeping him on the sidelines as he considered his future.
But Amorim’s sacking in January gave Mainu a new lease of life at Old Trafford. And Dalot, who appeared on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, believes the experience will benefit him in just one run.
“This shows that in football, no matter who the manager is, you have to approach it the same way,” Dalot said.

“For Coby, he could have gone a different route, because for you it’s really difficult because when you’re 20, you’ve played almost 80 games for the Manchester United first team and you’ve also played for the England national team.
“How do you explain to a 20-year-old guy that he’s been at the top and suddenly he’s not playing anymore? He needs to go back to what he was doing, train hard, be humble and just wait for the opportunity.”
“I don’t think it’s bad for him to go through this experience. You may say he should have played a little bit more, you may not, that may or may not be your opinion.”

“But I think it’s going to be beneficial for him in the future for him to go through that experience.” And I think he feels that now because he’s enjoying (football) more now. He won’t take for granted playing week in and week out.
“If you ask me about that situation, I think he would benefit a lot from going through that in his career.”
During Mainu’s absence from the team under Amorim, Dalot remained a constant presence, even though he was often at the receiving end of criticism from supporters. And the full-back admitted it was becoming increasingly difficult to drown out the negative noise.
He added: “Obviously, I think with everything that’s been going on online these days, it’s become a little bit harder. Everybody can say what they want.
“And unless you live in a cave, you’re going to be aware of what’s being said and what’s going on. But to be honest, my whole soccer career, my professional career, has been here, so I’ve had to learn how to balance that. I’ve had to deal with it.”
