Real Madrid’s England national team defender Trent Alexander-Arnold once again paid tribute to the late Liverpool striker Diogo Jota. The Portuguese striker and his younger brother Andre Silva tragically died in a car accident in the Zamora region of Spain’s Sanabria region in July last year.

When this shocking news reached the shocked soccer world, condolences poured in from all over the world. Liverpool have retired their number 20 jersey in memory of Jota, but the club’s fan base continues to sing his name throughout the match, once the game reaches the 20th minute.

His legacy lives on in many ways, with both Anfield and Molineux (home of his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers) acting as memorial sites for supporters wishing to pay their respects. People across the football world have come together to pay tribute to both players following their tragic deaths.

Liverpool’s squad, led by Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson, headed to the funeral in Gondomar, Porto, where a number of their Portuguese compatriots, including Ruben Neves, also paid their respects.

Van Dijk and Robertson brought flower arrangements emblazoned with the jersey numbers worn by Jota and Silva at the club. Alexander-Arnold continued to pay tribute to his former team-mate despite leaving Anfield for Liverpool before Jota’s death.

When he returned to Anfield as a Real Madrid player, he left flowers and an emotional message as a tribute to his “eternal 20” and called Jota a dear friend who “lighted up the room”.

The pair developed a close relationship during their joint stint at Liverpool, but now the England star has opted to wear Jota’s number on his boots. Eagle-eyed supporters noticed a tribute on his boots with the number 20 painted on his back alongside an infinity symbol.

Alexander-Arnold’s boots were discovered during Madrid’s 1-0 win in the Champions League play-off first leg against Benfica in Lisbon on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old played alongside Jota for five seasons at Liverpool before joining Spanish giants Madrid for £10m. Meanwhile, Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in September 2020.

The striker played a key role in the Reds’ Premier League title last season, scoring six goals in 26 appearances.
