Jamie Carragher tearfully apologizes to Tottenham over ’embarrassing’ relegation risk

Tottenham are in danger of being relegated from the Premier League after a turbulent season, but Jamie Carragher insists he wouldn’t be surprised if they were relegated.

Amid growing concerns about Tottenham’s top-flight status, manager Jamie Carragher has weighed in, warning the club are “not too big or good” to be relegated and that relegation would be “more embarrassing” than any team in the Premier League era.

Spurs have suffered another disastrous season domestically after finishing 17th last season and are now just two places and five points above the relegation zone. Thomas Frank was appointed as the club’s new head coach last summer and paid for the team’s poor performance in the job earlier this month.

Igor Tudor signed a contract until the end of the season on the condition that he would remain at Tottenham in the First Division, something that was unfathomable at the start of the season.

But Carragher said after watching them this term no one would be surprised if they slipped through the trapdoor.

“It’s often said that clubs are too big or too good to fail. No one would make that claim about Tottenham Hotspur,” the former Liverpool defender wrote in the Telegraph.

“The concerns that led to the end of Thomas Frank’s unhappy reign are justified. If you look at Spurs and compare their current form to third-placed West Ham United (a team who recently won at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium), suggestions that they are on the verge of disaster are justified.”

“If they fall into the Championship, it would be the most shocking fall in the Premier League era and the most embarrassing for a club of such wealth and fame since Manchester City backheel Dennis Law sent Manchester United into the Old Second Division in 1974.

“When you analyze the quality of Igor Tudor’s team for the first time in this weekend’s North London derby, the magnitude of the challenge is clear.

“The concern is the long period of decline under his two immediate predecessors, and how quickly that can be reversed. There is no escaping the shadow of the dreaded ‘R-word’ at Spurs, and relegation is a possibility. Adding ‘ridiculous’, ‘reprehensible’ and outright ‘rubbish’ to the legitimate description of their record over the past 27 months is what has led them to this dangerous situation.”

Carragher continues to agree with Tottenham’s decision to sack Frank, but Sky Sports experts point out that a manager with his organizational skills would normally be a boost for a club looking to survive.

However, he has concerns about Tudor, who has no Premier League experience and is currently in the midst of a battle for survival, despite a strong showing in Italy during his time at Juventus.

Tudor insists he has to give his all, which is no mean feat when his first assignment at Tottenham is the north London derby against Arsenal.

Carragher added: “While Tudor was successful in Italy, there is an element of risk when appointing a coach who may take time to adapt to English football. Spurs don’t have time.”

“Since the Premier League was founded in 1992, Everton are the only team of the original ‘big five’ to have been relegated.

“Things that until recently seemed unthinkable at Tottenham are now possible. Tudor doesn’t just have to go all out. He needs to start governing like an Olympic sprinter if he is to keep Spurs out of the bottom three.”
