Arsenal’s grip on the title further loosens as they draw 2-2 with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League
Gabriel Martinelli’s gesture towards Wolves supporters quickly backfired after Arsenal conceded a second-half equalizer to Molineux. The Gunners held a 2-0 lead but were forced to settle for a 2-2 stalemate, having secured just three wins in their last eight games in the division.
Martinelli was selected ahead of Leandro Trossard, with the Brazilian making his first league start since the 0-0 stalemate at Nottingham Forest last month. He played the full 90 minutes.
Bukayo Saka broke the deadlock within five minutes and Piero Hincapie extended his side’s advantage just after the interval. The Ecuadorian’s shot was subject to extensive VAR scrutiny, but he gave his run a perfect rating.

Hugo Bueno sparked Wolves’ fightback with a brilliant curling attack just after the hour mark. Moments later, Martinelli was seen raising his arms and gesturing to the home supporters about the scoreline after winning a corner.
Footage of the incident was uploaded to X, with fans slamming his actions as “arrogant”. And when Martinelli’s actions come back to haunt him, Wolves fans will have the last laugh.
Wolves opened the scoring in stoppage time, after Gabriel and David Raya collided trying to process a Wolves pass, before Samuel Edsey’s shot hit the right wing, deflected off Calafiori and into the goal.
This stalemate gave Manchester City a huge advantage in the race for the Premier League title. Josep Guardiola’s side face Newcastle United on Saturday, while Arsenal face Tottenham in a north London derby.

“Obviously we are very disappointed with the result and the way the game ended, but we have to blame ourselves,” Arteta confessed in the post-match press conference.
“I don’t think our performance in the second half, especially the way we played in the first half, showed anything close to the standards we need to win in this league, including the margins that should have existed today.
“It’s a disappointing moment. We all want to talk a lot about how we feel, but it’s not the time to do that, because everything we do must always be done with the intention of helping the team. I think we have to swallow that frustration right now.”
“When you’re at this level and you’re at the top, you have to take a hit and we deserved it today, so we’ll move on as soon as possible because we have a big game coming up on Sunday.”
