Joe Cole backs West Ham as FA Cup winner Crisencio Somerville can ‘survive’ in the Premier League if he reaches the ‘peak of his abilities’

‘I’m in a good space’ – Somerville reflects on his good form after scoring against Burton

Joe Cole believes Saturday’s match-winner Crisencio Somerville can keep West Ham in the Premier League this season.
The forward scored the only goal of the game as the Hammers defeated Burton Albion 1-0 away in the fourth round of the FA Cup, securing their place in the next round and continuing their recent run of form under manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Londoners have now won five of their last seven games in all competitions and are now three points clear in the league, with Nottingham Forest just ahead of them in 17th place.

However, the away team did not make it easy. Nuno made 10 changes to the starting lineup following the 1-1 draw with Manchester United, which went into extra time.

Somerville scored an excellent point in the first half of extra time, surviving a red card for a rough tackle on Freddie Potts in the 110th minute.

After the match, pundit Joleon Lescott praised Burton Albion for pushing their Premier League opponents to the end in an interview with TNT Sports.

He said: “What separated the teams was their individual Premier League quality. Barton can take a lot of credit for their performance and for the first hour or so they consistently matched West Ham’s effort and energy.”

Cole agreed, adding: “They just do what they say they’re going to do. They were going to make it ugly and they did. West Ham don’t have space in midfield. They don’t have space for Callum Wilson, they don’t have space for Adama Traore.”

“I thought Nuno could have made a change sooner. West Ham had a lot of control but you have to trust the bench. Tati (Castellanos) and Somerville just played it and they scored from behind.”

Lescott has been impressed with Somerville’s form, with the 24-year-old Dutch winger scoring five goals this season and in his best form this season after improving his fitness following injury problems.

“He could have gone down here and I think that shows a lot of confidence. Although he is far from the goal, he still believes he has a chance. No one can match his speed.”

And Cole suggested that if Somerville and fellow wideman Jarrod Bowen reach their full potential, it could be enough to keep West Ham in the Premier League for another season.

“He’s a confident young man,” he observed. “I think I said a few weeks ago that if he performs to the best of his ability alongside Bowen, West Ham can get back into the relegation battle and survive.”

West Ham’s next match is at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, February 21st.
