Tottenham have sacked manager Thomas Frank after losing just two of their last 17 Premier League games, and their next opponent will be Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has paid a classy tribute to “extraordinary” Thomas Frank after his sacking at Tottenham was confirmed. Spurs announced Frank’s departure on Wednesday morning, just over 12 hours after losing 2-1 at home to Newcastle.
The former Brentford manager’s reign comes to an end after just eight months, despite Tottenham remaining just five points above the relegation zone and finishing fourth in the Champions League table. Spurs’ next game is a small one, a north London derby against Arsenal every Sunday.
Following the “sad news” of his sacking, Arteta praised Frank. The Gunners manager said: “Well, it’s always very sad news when you have a colleague who can’t keep his job, because Thomas is a great coach and an exceptional person, and he’s proven that in the league.
“We know where we are. We know that our responsibility goes beyond just performance. That outcome can dictate what happens to us. We wish him the best in whatever he decides to do next.”

Asked if he thought Premier League clubs were becoming more impatient, Arteta said: “I don’t know. I don’t think you can think of every example as the same. I think it’s very different in every club’s situation, but there’s always a possibility.”
Tottenham initially showed patience with Frank, but a dismal run of just two wins in their last 17 Premier League games, along with an early exit from the FA Cup, ultimately spelled an end. Spurs said in a statement: “The club has made the decision to change the position of men’s head coach, with Thomas Frank resigning today.”

“Thomas was appointed in June 2025 and we have been determined to give him the time and support he needs to build a future together. However, the results and performances have led the board to conclude that changes are necessary at this point in the season.”
Frank has already been offered another job in the Premier League. Crystal Palace are looking for a new manager for next season after manager Oliver Glasner has already confirmed he will step down when his contract at Selhurst Park expires.
Former manager Mauricio Pochettino is the front-runner to succeed him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, the problem is that Pochettino is currently in charge of the United States national team, which is one of the co-hosts of this summer’s World Cup, making the appointment difficult.
