Brentford striker Igor Thiago said it was the “biggest dream of my life” to represent Brazil at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, ahead of their clash with Arsenal, live on TNT Sports and Discovery Plus on Thursday.
Thiago has had a sensational season with the Bees so far, scoring 17 goals in the Premier League, with only Erling Haaland scoring more goals.

However, the 24-year-old is yet to play for his country and with four months to go until the World Cup, he is keen to join manager Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

“It would be great. My biggest dream in life is to wear the national team jersey and represent my country,” Thiago told TNT Sports.

“Without a doubt, it would be the greatest accomplishment of my life and, God forbid, I would have the opportunity to become a world champion.”

Thiago joined G-Tech from Club Brugge in the summer of 2024, but was limited to just eight appearances last season due to two serious knee injuries, seven of which were on the bench.

The Brazilian describes the suspended season as a “very difficult time”, but believes it has allowed him to “see the Premier League better from the outside”.

Thiago had hoped to perform like he did this season once he was fit, but he didn’t expect the goals to come so soon.

“I have always dreamed at this time that one day I would be able to win a trophy like this or perform like this,” Thiago explained.

“I’ve always dreamed of it, but I never imagined it would happen this quickly. I thought it would take a little longer and I would have to do more. But thankfully, people recognized my efforts and the work I did on the pitch.”

Thiago’s goal has seen Brentford rocket up the Premier League table, with the Bees sitting in seventh place.

The west London side are just three points behind Liverpool and five points behind fifth-placed Chelsea, with both teams having played one game more.

Thiago, whose Premier League idols include Harry Kane, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo, is dreaming of qualifying for Europe.

When asked about his goals for the rest of the season, he said, “I want to perform well, continue to perform well, and get good results.

“Get Brentford into the elite squad with my team-mates and take part in European competitions.

He added: “For sure it will be an inexplicable feeling. It will be a feeling of having fulfilled a duty, of having made history in the Brentford jersey, because that is what I am looking for.”

“Fans will also be happy to have the opportunity to see Brentford in a European competition.”

Given last year’s injury problems, Thiago did not get much experience under Thomas Frank’s tutelage in his final season at the club.

But he is clearly enjoying life under his current boss Keith Andrews, likening their bond to a “father and son relationship”.

“We have a closeness, a sense of trust. He definitely looks for the good in me,” Thiago explained.

“He demands of me in a different way. He can communicate not only with me but with the whole group. He has a different way of communicating that works well.

“Definitely, it’s also a matter of respect and the patience for him to understand everything. I think that’s one of the most important things for him to get a good result from me.”
