The City of Birmingham released a statement regarding the owner’s recovery after suffering a stroke.
Birmingham City Councilor Tom Wagner is “recovering well” from a stroke. The club’s chief executive Jeremy Dale said Wagner will take a step back from his responsibilities with the Blues and Knighthead Capital Management while he receives treatment in hospital.
In a statement posted on the Blues’ website, Dale said: “Birmingham City President Tom Wagner recently suffered a stroke. Thanks to prompt medical intervention, he received immediate treatment and is now receiving excellent care.”
“We are pleased to share that Tom is making a good recovery. Although he will take some time off from day-to-day activities to focus on his recovery, Tom remains close to the club and we all look forward to welcoming him back.”
“Birmingham City Football Club is extremely important to Tom and to the entire Knighthead team. Their commitment to the club remains unchanged and our planning and operations will continue as usual under strong leadership. We thank you for your continued support and ask that you respect Tom’s privacy during his recovery.”

Wagner, 56, has been actively involved since Knighthead became Blues owner in July 2023. As well as upgrading the club’s current facilities and investing heavily in player acquisition, Knighthead is also working to build a 62,000-capacity stadium at the heart of Birmingham’s Sports Quarter development.
On the field, Birmingham returned to the Championship last season after being relegated the year before, finishing top of League One with 111 points. They drew 0-0 with West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday and sit 10th in the Championship after 32 games.
Manager Chris Davis told BBC Radio WM after the draw: “It was a battle that was exactly as I expected it to be, but if you look at it throughout the game, you’d have to say it’s pretty incredible that we didn’t win that game.” “There were moments near their goal. One shot off the line was a penalty by VAR and one clear on the goal line was unbelievable. There was a great save and we hit the post and the goal was canceled.”
“It’s disappointing not to get the three points, but we certainly tried hard enough to win. I really liked the way it ended and I just told the players to keep their heads up because they gave their all. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the three points, but there were certainly a lot of positives to take from the performance.”
