Arsenal maintain a six-point lead over Premier League leaders Manchester City after a dramatic weekend in which Josep Guardiola’s side came from behind to beat Liverpool.
Manager Martin Keown insists Arsenal should be happy that Manchester City beat Liverpool to keep the Premier League title race alive. City came from behind to win 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday to remain six points clear of leaders the Gunners.
When Dominik Szoboszlai broke Liverpool’s lead in the 74th minute, Arsenal looked set to beat Sunderland 3-0 and move into the lead with nine points to go. However, goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland turned things around in a dramatic and chaotic finale that put City on the back foot.
Arsenal are aiming for their first Premier League title since 2003-04, having finished second in the past three seasons under manager Mikel Arteta. With 13 games remaining, they remain favorites and former Gunners defender Keown actually thinks City’s win should be taken as a positive for his former club.
Keown told talkSPORT: “You think about the last game and think, ‘Okay, if we get to nine points, it’s going to be a story of Arsenal being champions.’ And I actually thought City might as well have won this game, just to keep it real. If you’re a potential champion, this is the life you have to live. You expect the unexpected.”

“It was a great result for City, but Arsenal didn’t lose this weekend. Arsenal won a very important game against Sunderland, a really good team.”
When asked for details, he added: “Man City might think this was their defining moment in the title race, the defining moment that victory kept them alive, but it always lived.
“In fact, I think it would be healthier to have six points rather than nine, because Arsenal’s story is not strong enough. If they go nine points down, it’s theirs to lose again and we’ll be doing all the publicity to try and keep this story alive.”

Arsenal return to action against Brentford on Thursday night, while City face Fulham on Wednesday night. Arteta has refused to get carried away and has remained calm after big wins against Leeds and Sunderland.
Asked at the weekend what the cushion at the top meant to him, Arteta said: “Nothing. We still have to win a lot of games to achieve what we want, so that’s not the focus. We did our job and did what we had to do. Let’s improve and prepare for Brentford.”
He added: “We still have to win a lot of games to achieve what we want, so let’s not focus on that. That’s something else. Now we’ve done our job, we’ve done what we need to do and we have to evaluate it, improve and prepare for Brentford. We have to keep raising our level.”
