Arsenal were approached to sign the central midfielder in the January transfer window, and he will return to Bayern Munich in the summer when Leon Goretzka becomes a free agent.
Arsenal will be among the teams looking to sign Leon Goretzka on a free transfer in the summer. The Gunners reportedly held talks for the Bayern Munich star in January that failed, but they could be in their favor at the end of the season.
Arsenal were keen to sign a central midfielder after losing Mikel Merino to a broken foot in January. Goretzka and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali were also linked with a move to north London, but Mikel Arteta’s side ended without any reinforcements.
Goretzka attracted a lot of attention in January as his contract with Bayern expires at the end of June. Arsenal and Atlético Madrid had both made offers for the 31-year-old Germany international, but he decided to stay and finish the season with Vincent Kompany’s side, who will compete for the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Pokal.
According to Bild, there will be no shortage of offers this summer, with Arsenal and Atleti also joined by Milan, Juventus and Napoli. However, Arsenal could have an advantage over their rivals as Goretzka is particularly keen to play in the Premier League, believing it would be a good fit for his style.

Goretzka has been with Bayern since 2018 and has helped Bayern win six Bundesliga titles, the Champions League and the DFB Pokal twice. He has made 292 appearances for Bayern, scoring 47 goals and providing 48 assists.
Interest in his role has been well known since January and Bayern were happy to keep hold of their experienced campaigner. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said last month: “Leon is very at home in this club and in this team. Despite several questions about his quality, he has decided to stay here until the end of the season.”

“After open and constructive discussions, we have come to the conclusion that he will seek a new challenge in the summer. These eight years at Bayern have been eight very successful years with strong people and players. Leon will do his best until the summer to win as many titles as possible with the team.”
Arsenal signed central midfielders Martin Zvimendi and Christian Norgaard in the summer transfer window, as well as midfield options Merino, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Ebelesi Eze.
