Arsenal have been linked with a move for Newcastle star Sandro Tonali in the January transfer window, and it appears they could face competition if the Gunners show interest again.
Should Arsenal make a new move, they will likely face competition for January target Sandro Tonali from Juventus. The Gunners have been linked with a loan move for the Italian midfielder following Mikel Merino’s injury.
In the end, the deal fell through and Newcastle managed to keep their star midfielder. However, it seems entirely possible that a move away from St James’s Park is being considered after all.
According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus have made the former AC Milan midfielder their top transfer target ahead of the summer. Interest increased after Newcastle hero Alan Shearer suggested Tonali could indeed be on the move.
“Sandro Tonali hasn’t reached the heights he did last season, but if Newcastle don’t qualify for Europe and can’t be competitive in the Premier League, that means other clubs will look at Newcastle and try to sign their best players,” Shearer told Betfair.

“It was a surprise in January, but I think it will be even more so in the summer if Newcastle don’t achieve what they have achieved in the last few years. Top players want to play Champions League football, but we know there is no real loyalty in football. I’m not saying Tonali will do something like that, but we know that if the club doesn’t qualify for Europe, other clubs will try to poach players.”
“Newcastle need to start winning games, get into the top half of the FA Cup and hopefully compete in the Champions League as well to make up for what has certainly been a disappointing result in terms of the Premier League at the moment. I know we’ve reached the semi-finals and we’ve been craving that for a number of years, but given the money that’s been spent and put into the club since then and where the club is going, it’s disappointing at the moment.”
Tonali, 25, joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 for £52 million. He made 93 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side, scoring seven goals.

He has two-and-a-half years left on his contract with Newcastle. Newcastle manager Howe said of the midfielder earlier this week: “I can only speak to Sandro as a person, as a player and his mindset here and now. I spoke to him yesterday and he’s absolutely fine.”
Tonali will return to action this weekend as Newcastle welcome Brentford to St James’ Park on Saturday night.
