The January transfer window ended quietly with just seven deals completed in the Premier League on deadline day.

However, the month was a big expense for both teams.

Manchester City sought to close the gap on Arsenal by signing Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth and Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, both of whom have been notable additions as top performers over the past 18 months.

West Ham, on the other hand, had Lucas Paqueta largely sidelined and introduced Pablo Felipe, Tati Castellanos and Adama Traore in an effort to keep the Hammers at the top of the table.

Deadline day moves included Liverpool signing summer signing Jeremy Jacquet for £60m and Crystal Palace signing striker Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves for £48m.

Other teams have chosen not to spend any money at all after spending a lot of money in the summer.

As usual, the January transfer window was not as busy as the summer transfer window, but there were still some big transfers that could shake up proceedings as the season progresses.

So who are the winners and losers in January?

It’s time to voice your opinion on which clubs and players benefited the most. Please vote below.

Best sign?

Antoine Semenyo

This is the definition of Manchester City’s transfer efficiency, as they completed the deal quickly and without much fuss, despite interest from almost every major rival in the Premier League. Semenyo has been one of Bournemouth’s star players this season and City made an early move to sign him ahead of the summer. He has already shown he can be a big hit, scoring three goals in his first four games, including a 2-0 win against Wolves.

Mark Gehi

Guehi was involved in one of the biggest transfer moves of the summer and looked destined to join Liverpool on deadline day, but his death meant the deal fell through. It felt like a huge missed opportunity to sign one of the best defenders in the Premier League. And after a successful spell with Crystal Palace, City struck again and signed Gehi on a reduced deal, with only six months remaining on his contract.

oscar bob

As is often the case in modern football, once a transfer occurs there is a domino effect. The same goes for Oscar Bobb’s move to Fulham. The Norwegian looked destined to get his chance at City last season, but a pre-season break meant he only made three Premier League appearances. This season, with the addition of Semenyo, they have gained nine, but Bob finds himself on the scrap heap. But make no mistake: he is a hugely talented player who could have a big impact on Fulham’s European dreams.

Tati Castellanos

West Ham have struggled for consistency in their forward line and have brought in Castellanos from Lazio now that Niklas Furkruk has moved to AC Milan. The Argentine finished as the Serie A team’s top scorer last season and was very prolific with New York FC in MLS, scoring 49 goals in 101 games. He distinguished himself early on, scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup win over QPR, and was instrumental in West Ham’s impressive run in the Premier League, defeating both Tottenham and Sunderland.

Who did the best in the January transfer window?

manchester city

With the additions of Guehi and Semenyo, there is little doubt that City are one of the biggest winners of this transfer window. These moves will give City a strong squad to chase the Premier League title in the short term, but once the likes of Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku return from injury, City will once again be rich enough to be the envy of Europe.

west ham

It has been a very busy period for West Ham, with Paqueta’s tumultuous time at the London Stadium coming to an end and players who struggled to live up to expectations in Fulkrug, James Ward-Prowse and Guido Rodriguez also leaving the club. Therefore, there was space to bring in three attacking names: Felipe, Castellanos and Traore. All three could bring new impetus to an attack that has been overly reliant on Jarrod Bowen, as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to keep the Hammers afloat.

Fulham

It may seem like an overstatement, but Fulham should be praised for signing a player of Bob’s quality without making any big moves, despite their interest in Harry Wilson. They have given themselves every chance to achieve great things by securing one of the European spots for next season under coach Marco Silva. Who would have imagined that at the beginning of the season?

Aston Villa

Villa have had an excellent season, moving up the table four points behind Arsenal and are considered one of the favorites to win the UEFA Europa League. At a critical moment, they needed depth behind Ollie Watkins, so they signed fan-favourite Tammy Abraham after a loan spell at Villa Park. As injuries began to mount in midfield, they brought back Douglas Luiz, another player who is adored by the fans and who knew the club and Unai Emery’s style from his previous time at Birmingham. Brazilian Alisson doesn’t have much of a future. It may not have been the flashiest window, but it could prove to be one of the most effective.

Who struggled in the January transfer window?

liverpool

Despite receiving praise from left, right and center during the summer transfer window, Liverpool have not had the season many had hoped for. They were in desperate need of reinforcements in defense as they faced competition for next year’s UEFA Champions League, but although summer target Guehi left for rivals City and the £60m deal for defender Jeremy Jacquet was completed, it did not materialize until the summer. In theory, Liverpool’s strongest XI can beat anyone, but if the injury lingers, it could be a tough few months at Anfield.

crystal palace

Although Crystal Palace lost key personnel, a strong case could be made that there is both good and bad for them, as they replaced them astutely and quickly, with the exception of centre-back. Brennan Johnson adds more pace to an already fast offense, and Evan Gesand looks to get his career back on track. Strand Larsen starred for Wolves last season, while Jean-Philippe Mateta ended up staying after his move to AC Milan was scrapped due to medical issues. It remains to be seen what will become of Mateta, but it could prove costly if he is unable to find a suitable replacement for Guehi.

wolf

Wolves may already feel there is little point in adding players now, as their chances of survival are so slim, and they may have a point. There has been marked improvement under Rob Edwards and the plan may simply be to field a team ready to make a quick comeback from the Championship. Strand Larsen are looking for big money, signing midfielder Angel Gomez on loan from Marseille on deadline day and signing Adam Armstrong from Southampton for £7m.
