It’s been a slow transfer window for Manchester United, both in terms of acquisitions and departures, as Michael Carrick looks to work with his current talent until the end of the season.
Tyrell Malasia is thought to be furious at Manchester United after Jason Wilcox blocked his move from Old Trafford on deadline day. The 26-year-old has been overlooked by the Red Devils this season and is set to make just one Premier League appearance in 2025/26.
As a result, there was widespread speculation this month that the left-back would be on the move in the winter transfer window. Malasia is believed to have been due to fly to Turkey for a medical on Monday, but sources claim he received a phone call from Wilcox shortly before boarding the plane, telling him he would remain at his current club.
It is now claimed that Malasia is angry at Wilcox and United as a result, given that he was hoping to secure more frequent playing time away from the Red Devils. Despite reports, Mirror Football understands there has been no contract or travel agreement between the player and the club in recent weeks.

The Dutch defender could find himself in manager Michael Carrick’s plans for the remainder of the season, given that United’s stance on using him may have changed due to Patrick Dorg’s recent injury. Dorg suffered a problem during United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal last month and there were reports that he could be sidelined for up to 10 weeks.
Coach Carrick was recently unable to establish a timeline for Dorg’s recovery, but the interim head coach acknowledged that Dorg may not be able to play for some time. “Unfortunately, Pat will be out for a certain period of time. We are still considering how long he will be out,” he said at a press conference.
Malasia’s retention could prove problematic in the coming months, given that his current contract expires this summer. As a result, he will be free to leave if the relationship cannot be repaired.
This comes as Malasia was included in Ruben Amorim’s five-man ‘bomb squad’ alongside Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Anthony and Jadon Sancho before he was sacked in January. He was also the only player who failed to secure a transfer from the club last summer.
Rashford is currently enjoying a successful season-long loan spell with Barcelona, while Sancho is enjoying a similar scenario at Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Garnacho earned a permanent move to Chelsea for up to £40m, while Anthony joined Real Betis for up to £21.65m.
Carrick appears to be confident in his current squad for the second half of the 2025/26 season, but there has been little activity in the current transfer window, which closes at 7pm. The 44-year-old has been a breath of fresh air in his first three games as Red Devils manager, overseeing a 2-0 win over Manchester City, a 3-2 win over Arsenal and a 3-2 win over Fulham.
However, speculation remains over his future at Old Trafford beyond the 2025/26 season. Given he is only on an interim contract until the summer, United are under no obligation to keep him regardless of his performance this term.

Instead, they may choose to put their faith in a more experienced head coach when they review their options in the coming months, with the names of Oliver Glasner, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel recently coming up.
United’s next game is at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday 7th February at 12:30pm. The club will then travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham on Tuesday 10th February.
