Cristian Romero has criticized Tottenham Hotspur’s upper echelons following the situation in Sunday’s game against Manchester City and the lack of transfer activity on the final day.
Once again, I feel like Cristian Romero needs an explanation. Tottenham’s captain claimed on social media that it was “disgraceful” that Spurs only selected 11 eligible players for Sunday’s game against Manchester City.
At worst, Tottenham’s lack of transfer activity becomes apparent. At best, it shows a lack of thought and respect for the club. And even in the best case scenario, he may try to explain it away, but it’s actually harmful.
After all, this was on the back of Sunday’s heroic fightback against Manchester City, as Spurs went from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at half-time. And they did it without Romero, who had a frankly terrible performance, being sent off sick at half-time.

“Great effort from all my teammates yesterday. They were unbelievable. Especially since we only had 11 players available, I wanted to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well. Unbelievable but true and shameful,” Romero wrote on social media, adding a facepalm emoji.
“We will continue to show up, take responsibility for turning this situation around, work hard and continue to stick together. All that remains is to thank all of our fans for being there and always supporting us.”
Now, this isn’t the first time Romero has used social media to get his message across, nor is it the first time people have suspected him of instigating a transfer. Just last month, Romero’s social media posts were forced to be edited to remove the word “lies” when talking about a lack of support from the club hierarchy.
It was originally written like this. “Others should speak up in times like this, but they don’t. It’s been going on for years. They only show up when things are going well and tell little lies.”
Let’s not forget that Romero is a World Cup winner, a club captain, and, in modern times, a world-class defender. On his off days, he’s crazy and a nuisance to the team’s detriment.
Romero’s comments cut to the heart of the club’s problems. Dear leaders. There is a real lack of leadership on the pitch and they are looking to solve that in the transfer market. Romero is supposed to be the leader and wears the armband, but it almost feels like a default since he was given the armband in the absence of any other obvious candidates. After this last outburst, I’m sure there are still some.
Tottenham clearly need to improve their team. They tried it in January and decided not to panic just for the effects. That would be a disaster.
Instead, they signed Conor Gallagher, who was available, for £34m. Top player, top professional, great attitude. And one for the future of Souza in Brazil. We also signed James Wilson from Hearts, but he is available for under-21s.
They tried more but failed, and Thomas Frank even made public the fact that they tried for Antoine Semenyo. They want Premier League players, good character and they have a strategy. They will go again in the summer. They are determined to support and support Frank. Yes, they have suffered injuries and are not growing taller because of them.
However, the club is struggling and needs leadership to overcome some dark days, although there have been some bright spots with European results and a place in the Champions League finals.
Romero should definitely avoid hitting the self-destruct button. Maybe he’s a player whose message and performance are so wrong that they can actually do just fine without them.
