Portsmouth confirmed a fan had died after medics tried to save his life during the incident outside Fratton Park before their win against West Brom.
Portsmouth have confirmed that a fan died outside Fratton Park before their win against West Brom on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred outside the stadium and emergency services were called, but they were unable to help. “Portsmouth Football Club is shocked to announce that a Pompey fan has passed away following a medical emergency at Fratton Park on Saturday afternoon,” the Championship club said in a statement.
“The incident occurred just outside the stadium before the match and despite the efforts of the emergency services, they tragically passed away. Their next of kin have been informed and our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of the supporters.”
“I would like to thank South Central Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance, as well as club staff and stewards, for their efforts in working so bravely to save the lives of our supporters.”
West Brom said on social media: “We are shocked to hear of this tragic news. The thoughts of all of us at Albion are with the friends, family and loved ones of our supporters at this desperately sad time.” Fans from across the football world also continued to pay their respects.

Portsmouth took three points ahead of the Baggies, who continue to struggle despite recent changes to the dugout. Conor Chaplin and Ebou Adams scored for South Coast, but the game was then overshadowed by tragedy.
The news comes exactly one year after Pompey fan Alec Lamb sadly lost his life at Fratton Park during a match against Middlesbrough. Due to this accident, the match was stopped just 3 seconds into the match.
When Portsmouth’s players saw the spectator becoming unwell, they immediately alerted the referee and sought help from a physiotherapist. A medic was seen pumping a spectator’s chest.
Medical staff continued to try to save the fan, with stewards blocking the incident with white tarps in the North Stand, but later in the evening Portsmouth confirmed the fan had died.
