The Hungarian midfielder has once again featured as an emergency right-back for Liverpool, before revealing details of ongoing negotiations over a contract extension at Anfield with two years remaining.
After an emotional night, Arne Slott will likely look back on the recent win against Newcastle United as one of his most satisfying performances of the season. With two superbly scored goals, Hugo Ekitike underlined his potential to become a talismanic striker, while his neat finishing and brilliant assists saw Florian Wirths continue to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.
And, of course, there was the thrill of scoring a goal from Ibrahima Konate, who returned to the team after the death of his father. It was a special moment. And for Slott, it was satisfying to see his side come from behind to win a Premier League game for the first time since their 5-1 title-clinching victory over Spurs in late April last year.

But there were other aspects of the display that made Slots happy. Not everything went well for Mohamed Salah, but he was a constant threat, distracting Newcastle’s defenders and setting up Virts’ attacks.
And although he himself was responsible for only one of them, Liverpool have scored 15 goals in the four games Salah has played since returning from African Cup of Nations duty. In the seven games he missed, Liverpool scored 11 goals. That’s no coincidence.
And Salah even took on the odd defensive duty to help the makeshift right-back in the slot. Not that Dominik Szoboszlai needed a lot of help.
Arguably Liverpool’s best player of the season so far, Szoboszlai put in another impressive performance in a position that is clearly not his favorite. He made it perfectly clear.
“Honestly, in my mind this isn’t even medium-term,” he says. “I’m a midfielder so I’m hoping that my right-back can come back from injury and move back into the middle.”
The Hungarian’s emergence as a key figure at Anfield certainly means a new deal will be finalized soon. There are many people within the club who see him as a future captain.
However, although negotiations continue, Szoboszlai is clearly not overly bullish that they will reach a conclusion any time soon. When asked if there had been any progress on a new contract, Szoboszlai said: “To be honest, there is nothing yet.
“Nothing is in my hands from now on. There’s no progress, but if a suitable offer comes along I’ll see.”
“Right now I’m doing my job on the pitch. It’s about the future. I love this city, I love the club, I love playing with them, I love Anfield, I love the fans. Let’s see what the future holds.”
“It’s not my responsibility. I want to (remain). We’ll see. It’s always there, it’ll come back and it’ll come back again. Let’s see what happens.”
At first glance, there appears to be little for Liverpool fans or management to worry about, but Szoboszlai still has more than two years left on his current contract.
However, despite Liverpool’s disappointing failure to defend their Premier League title, the 25-year-old is establishing himself as one of Europe’s outstanding midfielders. There is talk in Spain of serious interest from Real Madrid, and Szoboszlai is probably not in Liverpool’s top ten earners at the moment. You suspect that you need to change it immediately.
