Chelsea’s transfer policy and reinforcement approach has satisfied Liam Rosenior and he is excited to focus on training with his players in the final days of the transfer window.
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenia has admitted he is excited to hand over the club’s transfer business to others so he can focus on football.
The former player was hired earlier this month to lead the Blues, who fired manager Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day. He is yet to manage any major new players, although the January transfer window has provided an opportunity to strengthen the squad he has inherited.
Chelsea’s transfer business is led by a five-person sporting director system led by Paul Winstanley and Lawrence Stewart, along with Joe Shields, Sam Jewell and Dave Fallows. They take the cooperative approach that is becoming increasingly popular in modern games.
Rosenior was asked whether his workload would increase before the end of the January deadline, but the former Hull manager praised the fact that there are people at the club who can take care of that aspect.
“That’s the beauty of being a head coach in an organization. I’m not a traditional manager who picks up the phone and makes calls. I think I have some of the best people in world football working on those things. I probably see the last two percent of their work. It allows me to focus on what I need to focus on, which is the team and performance.”

The dugout recruit admitted he preferred that way of working because he “wanted to be on the training pitch”. A previous gig in Strasbourg, also under the BlueCo umbrella, meant he was well aware of the structure he was about to enter.
Maresca is thought to have wanted more control and influence before leaving, which ultimately led to him and the club going their separate ways. Chelsea’s model leaves it up to the head coach to lead the team from a footballing perspective, but that doesn’t mean he gets everything he wants when it comes to new players.
Maresca knew what kind of deal he was signing in terms of transfer policy when he arrived from Leicester. Chelsea are looking to sign the best young players in the world from the ‘lower’ leagues, and their pursuit of Enzo Fernandes from his time at Benfica is a great example of this.
But there were also points of friction. The Italian manager has revealed he is against the club’s decision not to sign the central defender after Levi Colwill injured his anterior cruciate ligament during pre-season. Club executives explained that they did not want academy candidate Josh Achiampong to request a transfer, which ultimately led to Maresca’s resignation.
