Liverpool manager Arne Slott said Novak Djokovic’s incredible longevity was “only given to a select few” as he reflected on the Serbian great’s ageless performance at the 2026 Australian Open.
Ahead of the meeting, Slott, who is also an avid fan of sports other than soccer, recalled how Djokovic had occasionally brought up his coaching methods.
“You have to have a lot of respect for a sportsman like him,” Slott, who was speaking at the AXA Training Center when Djokovic plays Sinner, told TNT Sports.
“Very few people stay at the top level for many years, but the number of years he’s been at the top level now…I think at his age he’s played in almost every Grand Slam semi-final in the last few years…with all due respect.
“I, we are lucky to be in the era of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi when it comes to football.
“Being in the era of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic is a privilege to watch every time, and the fact that he’s still a part of it says a lot about that.
“At the beginning of the interview we talked about Mo (Salah) and what it takes to play at the top level every few days for so long and Djokovic is a great example of that.
“In the past I have used clips of his tennis matches in moments where he was speaking and in meetings with his former club.”
Ronaldo said of the Serbian great: “For me, he’s a role model. When you have people as role models, awards come naturally.
“We have a similar story about his longevity. I think he deserves it, because he is a great example for this generation, the older generation, and the generations to come.”

Djokovic was full of praise for Ronaldo, admitting that the Portuguese legend motivates him to achieve more.
“When I wake up in the morning at 38 years old, I’m trying to find motivation after playing professional tennis at the highest level for over 20 years,” Djokovic said.
“When I’m feeling sore and wondering if I want to keep going, I see Cristiano’s example and what he’s trying to do.
“We have a lot of similarities and parallels. Even though we’re not part of the same sport, we push each other. That’s what you can feel.”
“We are showing future generations that there are no limits. The level of dedication, love and passion for the game builds motivation that is truly unbreakable and transcends the sport. It is something that will resonate with young people who dream of being just like you one day.”
“Standing here with him and sharing his love for the game sends a great message to kids all over the world.
“We want to see them play sports like tennis and football that lead to healthier and better lives. I’m proud to be on stage with him.”
