Scott McTominay continues to enjoy good form at Napoli, but the former Manchester United midfielder is keeping a close eye on his former club’s resurgence under manager Michael Carrick.
Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has expressed his delight at the transformation at Old Trafford under manager Michael Carrick and believes he saw it coming. The former midfielder was McTominay’s first-team coach during his time at the Red Devils.
Carrick stepped up as head coach until the end of the season, and his opening two games in the dugout restored optimism to the club. A 2-0 victory over neighbors Manchester City was backed up by a 3-2 success away against leaders Arsenal.
These consecutive wins moved United into fourth place in the Premier League standings. They intend to maintain this position until the end of the season.
Speaking about United at a press conference in Napoli, McTominay said: “Michael Carrick is a very nice guy. I have so much love and respect for him.”

“These two results against Man City and Arsenal were great, especially for me watching. So I’m very, very proud of all the players and long may this continue.”
McTominay added: “I’m not surprised. I wish him (Carrick) the best of luck. The first game was great and I hope he continues that way.”
The comments reveal just how keenly the Scotland international is monitoring his former team, and arrive just days after the club were urged by former striker Giuseppe Rossi to facilitate a return to Old Trafford. “It all depends on the coach,” he said. “It feels like it’s all up in the air.
“You can’t actually start buying players unless you know the manager’s situation. I always say McTominay because he would actually be a good player for Manchester United at the moment.”

McTominay left United in the summer of 2024, joining Serie A side Napoli for £25 million. He then grew up and received wide acclaim for his exhibitions in Italy.
His contribution last season was huge as the club won the Serie A title, and he was ranked 18th on the list of candidates for the 2025 Ballon d’Or. He also won the Serie A Player of the Year award.
This season, he played in 31 games in all competitions, scoring nine goals and adding a further four assists. Four of those games came in seven Champions League games.
