The UK has been hit with torrential rain and strong winds over the past day due to Storm Chandra, which has caused Football League matches to be postponed.
Three EFL matches have been postponed amid the disruption caused by Storm Chandra. The UK has been hit by severe weather in recent days, with strong winds, heavy rain and some snow.
And with all League 1 and League 2 games scheduled for midweek, it is inevitable that clubs will be affected as well. That is certainly the case, with three games already called off hours before kickoff.
Cheltenham Town were due to play Gillingham at home, but that game was postponed. Cheltenham said in a statement: “We regret to inform our supporters that tonight’s Sky Bet League Two match against Gillingham at EV Chargerpoint Stadium has been postponed due to flooding on the pitch.
“A pitch inspection was carried out at 9.30am following heavy rain that continued to fall in the area overnight and into this morning.

“EFL-appointed match officials inspected the surface at EV Chargerpoint Stadium and as it is not expected that pitch conditions will improve by tonight, they have taken the decision to postpone the match.”
Both teams have had unstable seasons in Ligue 2 this term. Gillingham are 12th in the fourth division, with Cheltenham in 18th, eight points behind.
Meanwhile, Port Vale were due to host Wimbledon in League One on Tuesday night, but that match was also called off. In a statement, the club said: “Following a pitch inspection, the playing surface at Vale Park has been deemed unplayable by match officials due to significant amounts of standing water. This evening’s match against AFC Wimbledon has been postponed.”
Wimbledon have won just nine of their opening 26 matches and currently sit 18th in the table. Port Vale, on the other hand, seem destined to slip into League Two with just 18 points so far this season.
The other game that has been postponed is Barrow’s home game against Oldham Athletic. A statement from the club read: “Following a full assessment of the situation ahead of tonight’s game, on the recommendation of the Safety Advisory Group, the decision has been taken to postpone the match against Oldham Athletic for safety reasons.
“The UK is currently affected by Storm Chandra and the wind speeds and gusts expected locally are at a level that threatens the safety of our supporters. These conditions will not only impact on the stadium site itself, but also on local travel routes and the ability of emergency services to operate effectively if required.”
“We have seen from previous similar weather events that deterioration of the situation can escalate quickly and unexpectedly. Based on this, and with safety as our top priority, the club formally consulted with the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and stakeholders before arriving at this decision.”
“We understand that this decision may cause frustration, particularly for supporters who have already made plans to attend, but the safety of our supporters must always come first. We have taken this decision as soon as possible to avoid travel for our supporters.”
