Patrick Dorg looks like a reborn player at Manchester United, with a change in position giving the Dane more attacking license and allowing him to progress further
Gary Neville has been surprised by the turnaround of Patrick Dorg, who had only recently developed into a winger and was considered an “average wing-back” under manager Ruben Amorim.
The Dane was Amorim’s first signing as he was looking for a wing-back to fit into his system, signing Dorgu from Leeds in Italy. However, the 21-year-old was unable to make much of an impact at struggling Manchester United.
Towards the end of Amorim’s reign, when he moved away from the 3-4-3 formation, Dorg found himself playing as a winger and continued in that position under Michael Carrick. The new head coach has adopted a more traditional system that suits the team and players.
Dorg scored in last weekend’s Manchester derby victory and was stunned by Neville’s form as the Red Devils beat Arsenal on Sunday, and this time he backed it up with a superb volley.
He told Sky Sports: “Patrick Dorg looked like a very average wing-back under Ruben Amorim. When he moves further forward, he looks like a completely different player.”

Neville elaborated on this further on his podcast, saying: “I can’t say anything bad about him because he’s an aggressive runner, he always wants the ball and he worked hard under Ruben Amorim. But you thought, who is he? And how is he going to get Man Utd back to where they need to be?”
“The first time we got a glimpse of his potential was when he actually played as a right wide under Amorim. We thought he could play a bit higher and when there were players behind him, he could play a bit. We thought he was a good wide player and could cause problems and get crosses in.”
“Then when Amorim put him back at wing-back, you thought, ‘If you look at him now, he’s clearly a winger.
United’s victory moved them into the top four, with calls for Carrick to take over from this season onwards. The former player continues to receive plenty of praise for helping United’s Champions League hopes to win the Premier League as they progressed through the top four sides.
