What should Liverpool do for Andy Robertson after Tottenham’s surprise offer?

It makes footballing sense that Arne Slott would want to keep Liverpool’s long-serving left-back until the end of the season, but the Scotland captain’s dedication and dedication has given him the option.

Liverpool's Andrew Robertson in action

Andy Robertson’s interview shortly after Scotland’s incredibly dramatic 2026 World Cup qualification was one I’ll never forget. It was almost unbearably poignant, emotional, honest and the most wonderful and heart-breaking tribute to his spouse, Diogo Jota.

Much was also said about Andy Robertson. Honest, straightforward, loyal. It confirmed what you always suspected when judging a guy from a distance without any insight. He is tough as nails and has a big heart.

In his own way, it’s a class act. A class act at an exclusive club. That’s why no matter what happens in the remaining few days of the transfer window, there will be no negative impact.

Eight-and-a-half years at the club should give him more perks than most players still under contract. If Robertson, who turns 32 in March, believes a move to Spurs would be a fantastic opportunity for him and his family in the final stages of his career, and is worried that a move won’t materialize in the summer, then Liverpool’s hierarchy will no doubt be sympathetic to his feelings.

And, of course, players who can leave for free at the end of the season will receive compensation. Robertson will be captaining his national team at the World Cup and wants to be in the best possible shape for the challenge.

And the truth is, Arne Slott is clearly pleased with Milos Kerkes’ progress and it is highly unlikely that Robertson will start a Premier League game once the Hungarian is fit. Robertson has only started four games in the Premier League this season.

So there are compelling reasons why Robertson now wants to move to London. But there are also compelling reasons why Liverpool and Arne Slott might want him to stay.

Even in a season where their Premier League title defense collapsed, they still managed to win a big trophy and secure a spot in the Champions League. Now, the latter should be achievable without Robertson, but Slott will need as many key personnel available to him for a Champions League tilt and FA Cup appearance.

Some observers will probably rate Robertson above Kerkes, but no matter what you think about it, one thing is certain. He’s a proven winner. He is a proven big game player. He has valuable experience. he is a leader

It’s worth forgoing the transfer fees available for players whose contracts expire this summer in order to have these talents at their disposal that could still bring in big prize money in the final months of the season.

And it was done. From a footballing perspective, it makes little sense for Liverpool to let Robertson leave at this point. But in terms of what he has done for the football club and how he conducts himself, the choice should be his own.
