Chelsea were sanctioned by the FA for an incident that occurred during a match against Premier League top four rivals Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge in December.
Chelsea were handed an eye-watering fine by the FA after a water bottle was thrown onto Aston Villa’s bench during a Premier League match last month.
The FA said in a statement: “Chelsea FC has been sanctioned for a breach of FA Regulation E20.1 which occurred during the Premier League match against Aston Villa FC on Saturday 27 December 2025.
“The club is said to have failed to check for inappropriate, provocative or abusive behavior by players or other personnel around the technical area after the final whistle.” Chelsea FC subsequently admitted the charges. Following a hearing, the independent regulatory commission fined the club £150,000, the reasons for which are set out below. ”

“The committee noted that if a spectator were to throw a bottle towards or into a technical area, it would be considered a serious act of violence and should not be tolerated at a football match. It is a very bad example for someone involved in professional football at the highest level in England to behave in such a disrespectful, irresponsible and dangerous manner towards professional football players.”
The incident was described in referee Stuart Attwell’s report. “After the match, we became aware of an allegation that an unidentified member of Chelsea’s technical area threw a plastic bottle towards Aston Villa’s technical area. The alleged incident occurred shortly after the final whistle,” he said.
Chelsea launched their own investigation into the incident, but detailed that they were unable to identify those responsible. Chelsea lost to Villa 2-1 on this day.

Joao Pedro gave the Blues the lead in the first half, but a goal from Ollie Watkins turned the game around. The defeat was Enzo Maresca’s penultimate game in charge of the Blues until his eventual sacking.
He left Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Day, just days after a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. The Italian was eventually replaced by former Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, who signed a six-and-a-half year contract with the Blues.
Chelsea will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace. They will then travel to Napoli for the final match of the Champions League group stage.
