Manchester United have agreed a deal to make the club’s history into a Crown-style TV drama, with Lionsgate set to produce the series.
Manchester United have reportedly signed a deal to adapt elements of the club’s storied past into a TV drama. The production, directed by Lionsgate, is still in its early stages.
However, it will follow a similar format to Netflix’s The Crown, which dramatized the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Under the deal, United Airlines will receive a guaranteed multi-million pound payout if the show is commissioned and subsequently featured on a streaming platform. The proceeds will then be split 50-50 between the club and Lionsgate.
This American production company is known for blockbuster movie franchises such as Twilight, The Hunger Games, and John Wick. Several sports-themed movies have also been made, including “Warrior” and “Draft Day.”

The Athletic reports that Jed Mercurio, a writer, director and avid United supporter known for his work on shows such as Line of Duty, will also be involved in the discussion. Discussions about a potential series could cover any era in the club’s history, from the 1958 Munich Blitz and subsequent rebuilding to the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

News of the reported talks emerged after United pulled out of talks with Amazon Prime for an all-access documentary that was due to follow the club throughout this season. The series will mirror those already produced by clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Sunderland.
However, United withdrew from talks after losing in the Europa League final in May, citing concerns about possible interference from then-head coach Ruben Amorim as a factor. Amorim was sacked earlier this month after a heated press conference following the 1-1 stalemate at Leeds United, suggesting he was unhappy at not having full control at the club.
He was subsequently succeeded by Michael Carrick, who assumed the position on an interim basis until the end of the campaign. Carrick’s tenure began in perfect style with a 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
United also previously held talks with Disney+ about a deal to feature a documentary series examining Ferguson’s time at the club. However, an agreement among all parties involved did not materialize.
