Casemiro’s four-year stay at Manchester United comes to an end in the summer, as the club’s midfield overhaul takes the next step.
Manchester United have announced that Casemiro will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. The midfielder joined the club from Real Madrid in 2022 and has made 146 appearances.
Casemiro, 33, has been a regular in Old Trafford’s midfield under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. He also started against Manchester City in Michael Carrick’s first managerial role.
A statement from the club said: “Casemiro will leave Manchester United this summer following the expiration of his contract. The legendary midfielder has spent four seasons at the club, making 146 appearances and scoring 21 goals.”
Speculation over his future has heated up in recent weeks and Casemiro is thought to have asked United to make an announcement now. He wanted to avoid false speculation that the club would offer him a new contract or trigger an option.
“Sequential winner Casemiro was unveiled at Old Trafford in August 2022 and quickly became a fan favorite due to his combative personality and ability to score at key moments. The Brazilian captain played a huge role in United’s victory in the 2023 Carabao Cup with a superb performance scoring a header against Newcastle United.”

“The 33-year-old also won the Emirates FA Cup in 2024. Supporters will have the opportunity to recognize Casemiro’s contribution in the final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest.”
Casemiro is understood to have asked for the decision to be made public in order to “clarify the situation externally”. The Manchester Evening News reported that United have decided not to renew his contract for the time being and have informed Casemiro of their decision.
The Brazil international was keen to avoid false speculation that he would be offered a new contract or that an extension option would be triggered. The former Real Madrid star has a clause in his contract that will extend his contract by one year if he starts 35 games this season.
Casemiro said: “I will carry Manchester United for the rest of my life.” “From the first day I left this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that our supporters share for this special club.
“This is not the time to say goodbye. We have to make more memories over the next four months. We still have a lot to fight for together. My full focus, as always, remains on doing everything I can to help the club succeed.”

He added on his Instagram account: “To know when the stage is over. To know when to say goodbye when you feel that you will be remembered and respected forever.
“Four months of giving our all for this badge and our goals. Forever respect and love for Manchester United and their amazing fans.”
United’s statement confirming Casemiro will leave the club in the summer comes amid a search for a new midfielder. United have been linked with a number of midfielder signings this month, and the possibility of a cut-price move before the February 2 deadline has not been ruled out.
Adam Wharton, Carlos Bareva and Elliott Anderson are all long-term targets for United, but they are not expected to be pursued until the summer. Ruben Neves, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Wilfred Ndidi have all been linked as short-term signings, with the trio expected to be available on reduced-price deals.
Casemiro and United have 16 games left in the season with the clear aim of qualifying for the Champions League. Carrick’s side currently sit fifth in the Premier League and could secure qualification to the prestigious competition.
