Diogo Dalot avoided a red card in Saturday’s derby between Manchester City and Manchester United
An explanation has been given as to why Diogo Dalot was not given a red card for his challenge on Jeremy Doku during the first half of Saturday’s derby between Manchester United and Manchester City. Dalot was cautioned for catching Doc with a high boot on his knee.
VAR checked the challenge after on-field referee Anthony Taylor gave Dalot a yellow card. However, Taylor’s original decision stood after VAR authorities investigated the incident.
The yellow card remained as VAR determined there was not enough intent to upgrade it to a red card. “The referee’s yellow card for Dalot for a reckless challenge was confirmed by VAR and the contact was deemed to be subtle and not caused by excessive force,” the Premier League’s official Match Center account X said in a statement.

Reacting to Sky Sports following the decision, former United captain and defender Gary Neville highlighted his concerns about Dalot before VAR confirmed he was spared further action.

He said, “It’s not good. It’s knee-high. The ball is there, but Jeremy Doku shifted it.”
“Diogo Dalot is very slow. He’s clearly aiming for the ball, but Doc is too fast for him.”
United will be hoping to improve their chances of qualifying for Europe this season with a win against their neighbors. Meanwhile, City will be looking to put pressure on Arsenal after picking up three points against Old Trafford.
City are without a win in three league games and are six points behind leaders Arsenal. Seventh-placed United have not been able to capitalize on their good form, but are still only three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
And Red Devils caretaker manager Michael Carrick expects Benjamin Sesco and Matheus Cunha to make an impact off the bench against City.
Asked on Sky Sports why two players were left out of Neville, Carrick said: “We’ve got good players but it’s a decision we have to make. There’s always going to be players who are disappointed not to start.”
“But these days it’s even more important to finish games. They have great talent. It’s nothing personal at all. I’m a big fan of both players and they’ll make a big difference for us.”
Koby Mainu makes his first start of the Premier League season. “Coby is a great player. He has great talent and ability. The big thing for me is that he played in some big moments,” Carrick said.
“He’s been able to live up to the expectations and he’s played for the national team so that comes with that and I’m looking forward to watching him develop.”
