Liverpool secured a thumping 3-0 victory over French giants Marseille on Wednesday night, but Reds manager Arne Slott revealed why his side were unable to repeat their performance in the Premier League.
Steven Gerrard has told Arne Slott to stop talking and start working on solutions to Liverpool’s inconsistency this season. The Reds have endured a roller coaster of battles this term.
Slott’s side secured a significant position in the Champions League table with a 3-0 win against Marseille on Wednesday and remain in a strong position to progress to the last 16. The performance was different from some of the previous performances in the country.
The current Premier League champions are in 4th place, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal. Asked what the difference is, Slott said that opposing teams have problems building their defensive structure. This is something you don’t see very often in the Champions League.
He said: “We know why we are inconsistent. It’s mainly when the game is open. It’s completely different to play against low blocks. You can’t compare it to tonight’s game where both teams want to press and play from the back. If we’re inconsistent, it’s because we struggle with low blocks.”

He added: “For me, it’s more fun to go to a game if you watch Marseille,[Real]Madrid, Atlético Madrid or the games we played in the Champions League.”
“The teams we play do pretty much the same thing they do in other games, but in the Premier League they play a certain style after seven, eight, nine games, and then they play us and completely change their style.
“Then you just have to stand on the line and just hold the ball and hope something happens. Of course we train certain things and try to improve the little details. As Pep said yesterday, it’s important to dominate one-on-one against low blocks.”
And while Slott was clear about Liverpool’s problems so far this season, Reds icon Steven Gerrard was not convinced. After the Reds’ win over Marseille, the former midfielder claimed it was up to the Dutchman to find a way to win regardless of the opponent’s setup.

“I’m really happy for him (Slot) because it’s not easy when you’re under that kind of pressure and the results aren’t consistent, but his tactics tonight were spot on and I think he deserves a lot of praise and credit.”
“But he should stop mentioning the low block. It’s been happening at Liverpool since I was playing and for years before I played. That’s just the way it is.”
“The team intends to do that and we will do everything we can to stop Liverpool. The important thing is that we have to find solutions. We have to let the players do it and we have to find solutions. Then we will be able to turn the game with a low block into a win instead of a draw.”
