Gabriel Jesus has expressed his desire to remain at Arsenal beyond his existing contract and believes the team is inching closer to Premier League glory. The striker, who joined the Gunners from Manchester City in 2022, has a contract until June 2027. The Brazilian forward underwent surgery on his left knee last year after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament, but has confirmed his intention to remain at Arsenal for the time being, despite continued rumors suggesting he could leave the Emirates Stadium.
“I think my first goal is to be healthy. It’s my fourth season at Arsenal and I’ll probably play one-and-a-half, two seasons. I used to ask myself why. I don’t ask myself that anymore. My wish is to stay at Arsenal and then I have a contract. If you ask me, of course I want to extend my contract, I want to stay, I want to win trophies.”
Premier League favorites Arsenal were held to a goalless stalemate by Nottingham Forest on Saturday night, failing to take full advantage of Manchester City’s loss to Manchester United.
The Gunners have now shifted their focus to the Champions League, but questions remain over their title challenge with Arsenal.
With his side leading the table by seven points, Jesus admitted the Gunners are close to winning the championship after two previous near misses. “What I think is we’re getting closer,” he said. “Unfortunately, the last three seasons we’ve been here we’ve finished second.
“We are in good shape and in a good position. We are happy to be in a position to win games. We haven’t won the last two games but it’s still the Premier League and it’s tough.”
The Gunners face Inter Milan at the San Siro tomorrow night, and when asked if he believed his team could win Europe’s elite club competition, Jesus said: “I think every player at any club can win the Champions League. We believe. Otherwise, why are we here? But we have a long way to go.”
Jesus also spoke about his relationship with Víctor Göqueres, saying: “Vic is a great guy. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there when he came, when he signed. I was rehabbing in Brazil.”
“Since I came back we have had a good relationship and we talk about football. We are the same age. I have been playing here in the Premier League longer than him and sometimes I have an opinion on goals and sometimes he has an opinion. He is a top striker.”
“He scored a lot of goals at his previous club and I’m sure he’ll score here as well as he did for us.”
But when asked if it was time for him to take up the main centre-forward position, Jesus replied: “That’s a difficult question. Vic is a top player who can always score and Kai is a great player. I’m very happy to be back.”
