Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai has issued a statement following allegations of “disrespect” after he lashed out during the Reds’ FA Cup win over Barnsley earlier this month.
Dominik Szoboszlai has hit back at claims he was “disrespectful” towards Barnsley, suggesting he would do it again despite his mistake. The Hungarian midfielder was accused of howling against the Ligue 1 side in the FA Cup match against Liverpool earlier this month.
He tried to backheel the ball to goalkeeper Giorgi Mamadashvili, who made a disastrous mistake and passed the ball to Adam Phillips, who scored the goal. The mistake didn’t sit well with Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane, but Szoboszlai later apologized.
Afterwards he said: “I was a little disappointed with our goal. I don’t think any player would do something like that against Chelsea, against Arsenal or in the Champions League. To be honest, I’m a little disappointed. I thought our players were at the top.”
“Yeah, potentially (that was rude). He doesn’t do that against Arsenal, he doesn’t do that against Chelsea, he doesn’t do that in a Champions League game. He doesn’t do that.”
After a difficult few weeks in which he made a mistake against Barnsley and missed a penalty against Burnley, Szoboszlai suggested he never meant to disrespect the League One side.

“Personally, it’s been a tough week,” he said. “I made a mistake against Barnsley but I have to make it clear that in my opinion it was not disrespectful and I will do the same against Arsenal, City and Chelsea.
“I didn’t want to give the ball back to Giorgi (Mamadashvili) and I wanted to continue, but to make it clear I tried to pretend that I was playing back.
“I missed a penalty (on Saturday), but I’m going to keep going and score the next penalty and make sure I score.”

Szoboszlai has been one of Liverpool’s bright lights in what has been a difficult season. The former RB Leipzig man has already scored six goals, but manager Arne Slott insisted he would discuss his mistakes with the midfielder.
Speaking after the win over Barnsley, the Dutchman said: “I don’t think you should do that in a Premier League match, a League Cup match, a friendly or a training session. It’s a strange choice and I have an opinion about it, but I’ll keep it to myself and talk to Dom about it.”
Liverpool and Szoboszlai are due to return to action this week with a trip to Marseille in the Champions League before a trip to Bournemouth at the weekend.
