The Manchester United legend made no secret of his thoughts on Michael Carrick’s appointment ahead of Manchester United’s game against Man City.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has made an unusual rant about the team and Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim manager. The United icon also fired at Jonny Evans after he was furious about the situation at his former club.
Carrick will be appointed until the end of the season this week, with United aiming to identify a permanent successor this summer. His first game could not have been more difficult, with United taking on title challengers and arch-rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford in an early Saturday morning kick-off.
Ahead of that match, Keane doubted the quality of Carrick and Evans and did not hide his thoughts on the situation. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I’m more concerned about the manager appointment and the staff that’s come in with them, but I think at this stage of the season, looking at the group of players they have, it’s going to be like most people.”
“That would be a big question, look at Michael Carrick, whatever his mission was at Middlesbrough, I’m sure it was to get promoted, but he didn’t do that so you could say he failed there.

“I’m not saying he’s a bad manager, it’s a difficult job, but it’s great for him to get the chance. The staff he’s brought in, we sit here every week and talk about Man United being the best of the best, and I don’t see that with this appointment and his staff at the moment. But that doesn’t mean they can’t deliver.”
“It’s a great opportunity for him and his staff, but of course I’m worried, as I said about the former manager.”
He was harshly critical of the decision earlier in the week and further questioned Evans’ appointment to the first-team coaching staff. The former defender’s return comes just months after leaving his role as loan manager.
“It’s not about Jonny Evans, it’s more about the club, the decision making, who to bring in. Jonny Evans left Manchester United about four, five, six weeks ago, right?

“I quit a month ago and I’ve had enough of it. I haven’t been there for 10 years and it’s been a few months. United are making hundreds of staff redundant every week and Johnny is out of the job. Darren Fletcher will be called up in a week.”
“My problem with Jonny is that he hasn’t been coached and hasn’t been in the academy for a few years.
“So Johnny, who had quit being a loan manager, gets a call and says, ‘Would you like to come back?’ I’m sure Johnny is thinking, ‘What’s that about being a kit manager, or am I working with the U12s? “No, you’re coming back to the first team to work under Darren.”
“Obviously it’s a great opportunity for him. There are two more games and if things don’t go too well, that’s probably the end. We’ll have another manager, but he wants you to stay too.”
Asked if he would have helped United, he said: “Probably no. I don’t want to work with people above me who are telling me who my staff should be and which players I should bring in.”
“There was turmoil going on behind the scenes. I’m not saying the former manager didn’t help himself, but one day he’s going to come out and say there were decisions made that I wasn’t happy with.”
His rant again touched on Mr Carrick’s appointment in a debate with fellow commentator Daniel Sturridge. When Sturridge said Carrick could succeed if United played attacking football, Keane said: “Of course he can. You’re making a point.
“I agree with you, it could happen, but I don’t know because decisions are being made at the top at this club for these staff and the staff he comes with.
“Wilcox, whoever makes the decisions, people talk about looking for yes-men, but there are a lot of managers out there who are yes-men.
“We’re on Sky every week and we’re talking about Man Utd, the best, biggest club in the world, and then all of a sudden you’re betting on a manager who has no track record, no staff, no track record.”
