Manchester United put in a fantastic performance to beat Manchester City 2-0 at Old Trafford and firmly return to contention for the top four.

Manager Michael Carrick was in the dugout for the first time since being appointed caretaker manager and watched his side put in a fantastic performance, with second-half goals from Brian Mbeumo and Patrick Daugu securing a deserved victory.

United dominated the game and created the better chances in the first half. Gianluigi Donnarumma was busy making a series of impressive saves to keep City in contention, but in the end United got a deserved goal.

Manchester City vs Manchester United player ratings

Senne Ramens 7: Misjudged the situation leading to an unnecessary corner kick in the first half, but made up for it with a save from Max Alleyne. He showed excellent handling skills in the second half as well.

Diogo Dalot 6: He was booked for an early reckless challenge on Jeremy Doku and followed up with a poor pass out of play, but managed to calm down afterwards.

Harry Maguire 8: Missed an early scoring opportunity, but was outstanding defensively against Erling Haaland. A truly positive performance.

Lisandro Martinez 7: Great sliding block from Haaland early in the second half. He demonstrated excellent game reading skills and ball control.

Luke Shaw 7: Also booked early, but handled Antoine Semenyo well in the first half, supported by Phil Foden. Smart performance.

Casemiro 9: Missed a scoring opportunity, but made a great recovery tackle on Haaland after Koby Mainu’s misplaced pass. His performance as a holding midfielder was outstanding.

Koby Mainu 7: Fun shimmy pass Semenyo showed off his skills. He was a bit careless in the second half with a loose pass to Haaland, but he deserves to be on the pitch more.

Amad 8: Absolute dynamo. He gave Nathan Ake a hard time but managed to book Nico O’Reilly within three minutes. He could score and was always a threat. He hit the post late in the game.

Bruno Fernandes 8: Unfortunately, it was a close call for offside. He sent in a sublime pass to create a chance for Dorg and then put in a perfect pass for goal. This was Bruno’s masterpiece.

Patrick Dorg 8: An unexpected addition to the team, he made a huge impact. He was sharp on the ball, scored a great volley in the first half and quickly scored the second goal.

Brian Mbeumo 8: His work rate was exceptional and he used smart movements to try to confuse City’s defense. He tested Donnarumma with a good volley and was clinical for his next chance.

Substitute.

Matheus Cunha 7: He made a difference at both ends of the pitch. He made a decisive tackle in front of his own area and assisted Dorgu’s goal.

Manuel Ugarte 6: Didn’t have much time to make an impact after replacing a tired Casemiro.

Mason Mount 7: He thought he had a goal late in the game but it was ruled out for offside.

Aiden Heaven 6: He was introduced late in the game.

Unused substitutes: Bindil, Yoro, Malasia, J. Fletcher, Sesco.
