David Moyes has helped Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad with an unprecedented number of former Manchester United stars and the stats to back it up.

With Tuchel watching from the stands, Tierno Barry scored the only goal of the game to give the Toffees three points.

And Moyes now believes uncapped duo James Garner and Keiynan Dewsbury-Hall, who have performed well in recent weeks, could also compete for a place in the England squad.

Asked about the conversation he had with manager Thomas Tuchel after the full-time whistle, Moyes told Sky Sports: “I’m sure one or two of them are on the way.”

“I think players like James Garner and Keenan Dewsbury-Hall have been great this year, so I hope that continues for a long time.

“I think[the results]say a lot about[Everton’s team]. I’ve been around the game long enough.

“It is a credit to the players that we were able to come here and get a result with what we have and, more importantly, with the players we lack.

“It’s in Everton’s DNA. We have something here that can dig out wins when we need them.”

Is Moise right?

Former Manchester United midfielder Garner will have impressed Tuchel with his commanding attitude during the win at Villa Park.

The midfielder has been key to Everton’s success this season, helping the club to 10th place in the Premier League table.

Garner has made 32 interceptions, the second-most in the league this season, just seven behind Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo’s 39 in first place.

The 24-year-old recorded 64 tackles during the 2025/26 season, making him the fourth most tackled player in the league after Joao Parinha (74), Florentino (70) and Neco Williams (65).

Importantly, he won the ball back 114 times and is also in the top five in possessions won.

These stats suggest he could be a good option alongside or as back-up to Elliott Anderson, especially if Tuchel wants to let Declan Rice go this summer.

But with big names such as Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rodgers vying to be part of England’s senior midfield squad, it will be difficult to force his way.

Can Grealish still succeed?

Moyes may not have mentioned Grealish’s name, but the Three Lions favorite is still knocking on his door despite previously being left out of Tuchel’s England squad.

The playmaker is in the top three in assists this season with six, with one to Rayan Cherki and three to Bruno Fernandes.

He is also in the top five for chances created with 38, one place behind former City team-mate Jeremy Doku.

If he can finish the season strong, he could be a surprising addition to this summer’s World Cup squad.
