Ben Davies was stretchered off the pitch on oxygen after colliding with Jarrod Bowen during the first half of Tottenham’s game against West Ham. The 32-year-old defender appears to have injured his left leg. Davis was sent off and replaced by Jed Spence. The extent of the injury is not yet clear, but manager Thomas Frank is expected to provide an update after the game.
The Wales international, whose contract in north London expires at the end of this season, has only recently returned to action after a long spell out due to injury. However, a physio rushed onto the pitch to tackle Bowen, who had his leg secured in a brace.
To make matters worse for the full-back, he was shown a yellow card by referee Jared Gillett as he left the pitch.
Davies, 32, suffered a hamstring injury in October and missed five crucial games against Aston Villa, Everton, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.
He returned to the team at the end of November and came on from the bench in the 2-1 defeat against Fulham. Davies made his first appearance in the Champions League this season as a substitute.
Davis was given about 20 minutes of playing time in the final stages of the 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague. A few days later, he came on as a substitute again in a 3–0 loss to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Crisencio Somerville, one of the top performers in the first half, saw his deflected strike fly past Guglielmo Vicario just before Davis was injured.
The injury could also have an impact on the World Cup, with Davies previously set to become Wales’ captain if they qualify for this summer’s North American tournament.
Wales will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-off semi-finals in March, before facing either Italy or Northern Ireland for a place in the tournament.
