Manchester City’s legal battle with the Premier League is still unresolved
Manchester City’s legal battle with the Premier League could continue for another year, it has been reported. The Independent claims that the three independent judges have not yet issued a ruling and, apart from a few judges, no one knows whether the panel will reach a conclusion.
City were charged with breaching financial regulations between 2009 and 2018 and failing to co-operate with a Premier League investigation. The club have repeatedly maintained their innocence and are said to be facing 115 charges, but it is believed there could be up to 130 offences.
Josep Guardiola’s side won three Premier League titles during this period, and the independent panel heard both cases from September 16, 2024 to December 6, 2024. There was initially talk that a verdict could be handed down as early as February 2025, but both sides planned to appeal if the result was unfavorable.

It’s not necessarily surprising that it took so long to see results, with Guardiola’s first comments in February 2025 suggesting there would be a solution in March. However, there were no results and Premier League boss Richard Masters was asked for an update in July.

He told NBC: “You can ask questions, but our rules are very clear and this is a confidential process so I can’t give you any information about timing or anything like that. I can’t add anything to that.”
Latest reporting from the Independent suggests there is frustration at the Premier League’s top brass over the long delay in reaching a conclusion, despite neither party being able to speed up the process. With the impending signing of Marc Guehy, City’s net spend from December 2024 onwards will exceed the £500m threshold, something the report shows has angered several Premier League clubs.
Guardiola faced fresh questions about his current position on the 115 charges and whether he wants a swift resolution. But he didn’t reveal much, replying: “That’s the same question I would ask you: I don’t know. I don’t know.
“Maybe you have better information than me! Don’t you? Neither. I’d like to know it, but I don’t know, I don’t know.
“That’s the same answer to your question. Same answer as mine one, two, three years ago. They’ll be very busy.”
