Jamie Carragher has questioned the management decisions made by Manchester United and Chelsea as their new managers do not have the background expected of clubs of that level.
Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester United and Chelsea’s recent managerial hires have been “underwhelming” and are not offering them the best chance of ultimately winning the Premier League.
The Blues sacked Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day and immediately replaced him with Liam Rosenior from Strasbourg. The former player’s CV lists Derby, Hull and the French team, but despite his growing fame, he has yet to work in the top flight.
He has won one and lost one of his two games in charge, but his appointment follows the ownership’s trend of using high-potential managers, Graham Potter and Maresca, rather than pursuing big names as in the past.
Meanwhile, United sacked Ruben Amorim and brought in Michael Carrick until the end of the season. Apart from a three-game interim stint as manager, he has also never held a top job in the Premier League. His first managerial career was with Middlesbrough.
Carragher claims the big-time manager is almost being killed off and that both clubs are failing to recruit the best talent despite having the potential.

He wrote in the Telegraph: “For those considering a shortlist of suitable candidates, the overriding key question must be: ‘Will this manager give us the best chance of winning the Premier League?’ As for Rosenior and Carrick, the answer is no.
“They could make great coaches and if they continue to go on to have successful coaching careers, those who supported and recognized their potential to manage at the highest level deserve praise. But we must also recognize how underwhelming the latest recruitment decisions are by two of England’s biggest and most successful clubs.”
Carragher cites a major change in football where clubs are no longer looking for a dominant figure to oversee every aspect of the club. Instead, they have people in a position to deal with it and simply want individuals to coach the teams they build.
He said: “Chelsea fans are desperate for a new Mourinho or Ancelotti, and United supporters are waiting for the next Ferguson. Ferguson is the embodiment of their ambitions and their manager. Meanwhile, managers are looking elsewhere because many of the responsibilities once absorbed by the all-powerful leader have been delegated.”
