Michael Carrick has been confirmed as Manchester United manager until the end of the season, but Micah Richards believes the Red Devils could soon face a new dilemma.
Micah Richards supports Manchester United’s appointment of Michael Carrick but believes he could cause new problems for the Red Devils. United announced on Tuesday that the former midfielder would be returning to take over from Ruben Amorim until the end of the season.
The former Middlesbrough manager will oversee the remainder of the campaign before stepping down in favor of a more permanent name. Ahead of that, the club’s shortlist has already been revealed, with England manager Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti and Mauricio Pochettino also among the candidates.
However, Richards believes that if Carrick performs well in the coming months, United could face a new dilemma over whether to hand him the job permanently or stick to their original plan.
He told Sky Sports: “The only question I have is, what if he runs really well?”
“We know Tuchel’s situation and his contract until the end of the World Cup. There are several other managers available, but that’s the only challenge I think. From the current point of view, I think this is a good appointment.”

“Obviously, confidence seems very low at the moment. New manager, new momentum. We haven’t worked well with Fletcher in the last few games. I think he’s the right guy in terms of what they need right now. Long term we don’t know yet, but so far I like it.”
Carrick has already been told the goals he needs to achieve between now and the end of the season. United bosses spoke to the Red Devils’ stars and underlined their expectations for the remainder of the season, with Champions League qualification being their main objective.
United currently sit in seventh place in the Premier League, just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool. Carrick will be hoping for a dream start to his second spell as United take on rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford this weekend.

Speaking at a press conference after announcing his return, Carrick said: “It’s an honor to take on the responsibility of leading Manchester United. I know what it takes to succeed here. My focus now is to help our players reach the standards we expect at this great club. I know this team is more than capable.”
“I have already worked with some of the players and have, of course, continued to follow the team closely in recent years and have full faith in their talent, dedication and ability to succeed here.
“We still have a lot to compete for this season, and we are ready to bring everyone together and give our fans the performance they deserve for their loyal support.”
