Manchester United are being urged to appoint the Liverpool legend as their next permanent manager despite the backlash that could result. Michael Carrick will take charge of the Red Devils on an interim basis following the sacking of manager Ruben Amorim last week. The former Middlesbrough manager will remain in the dugout until the end of the season, at which point a permanent successor will be chosen.
Keys wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Perfect. United should shake the world and appoint Alonso. And please don’t say his time at Liverpool rules him out – (Sir Matt) Busby played for them and (Manchester) City.”
It seems unlikely that Alonso would jump at the chance to join United, given that such a move would risk undoing his achievements at Liverpool. It could also spark a backlash among Red Devils fans, with supporter dissatisfaction already at an all-time high.
United were reportedly considering the possibility of hiring Alonso in the summer of 2024, before ultimately sticking with Erik ten Hag. According to the Daily Mail, he was approached by club leaders but declined the opportunity.
However, things have now changed and the Spaniard could emerge as a target again, given his newfound ability.
For now, the Red Devils have placed their faith in Carrick, with the former midfielder set to remain at the helm of his old club until the end of the season.
He will be tasked with qualifying for the Champions League, the only thing United have to do after being knocked out of the FA Cup last weekend.
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid winger Steve McManaman recently backed Carrick to bring renewed optimism to Old Trafford after a tumultuous period under Amorim.
He told TNT Sports: “They need a clean slate and a fresh start and that’s what Michael is bringing in. If Michael comes in, I think he’s a better hire than (Solskjær).”
Carrick will be thrown straight into United’s deep end, with the 44-year-old expected to be in the dugout for this weekend’s Manchester derby.
