Michael Carrick set to become interim manager of Manchester United after agreeing in principle to return to Old Trafford
Michael Carrick will take on a number of pressing issues as Manchester United’s caretaker manager. The club legend has agreed in principle to remain in charge for the remainder of the season, with the deal now finalized.
The 44-year-old, who could take charge in Saturday’s Manchester derby, was previously part of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United coaching teams. Prior to being appointed manager by Ralf Rangnick, he also briefly served as caretaker manager for three games in 2021, winning wins against Arsenal and Villarreal and a draw against Chelsea.
After leaving Old Trafford, Carrick was appointed manager of Middlesbrough in October 2022 and remained in the role until the end of last season. His plans for the remainder of the campaign have reportedly impressed United bosses, but he has some important decisions to make during his term.
Coby Mainu’s Chance
Koby Mainu has had a challenging season so far. The United academy graduate was not Ruben Amorim’s first choice and had only started once in the Carabao Cup this season before the Portuguese was sacked.
The appointment of a new manager gives the 20-year-old a fresh start amid constant speculation about his future. For the United prospect, his performances so far have already earned the approval of manager Carrick, with the former Boro boss praising the England international over the summer.

Of Mainu, Carrick said: “I think it’s huge for the club to have a player who comes out of the academy and knows the club and feels the club. To have that kind of talent, as he’s already shown, you have to say: ‘Yes, he understands it, he knows it. Let’s help him, let him develop and stick with him. I definitely think there’s a place for him.’
These comments suggest that Mainu could see more first-team action under Carrick compared to what he experienced under Amorim, which will be welcome news for United supporters.
Bruno Fernandes’ future
Carrick is familiar with the United captain’s abilities, having previously worked alongside Bruno Fernandes during his time on Solskjaer’s coaching staff. He has played over 310 games for the club, scoring 103 goals and providing 95 assists, often pushing his team over the edge with his individual brilliance.
However, United almost lost him after Saudi Professional League side Al Hilal made a £100m offer for the Portuguese playmaker. Although the bid was rejected, Fernandes recently admitted he was hurt by suggestions the club were happy to let him leave.
One of Carrick’s main objectives will be to reassure Fernandes that his long-term future remains at Old Trafford. Although it may only be a temporary appointment, the caretaker manager can show the club is moving in the right direction through some great performances during his short tenure.
relocation dilemma
Mainu may be ready for further action, but United’s midfield still requires attention. Amorim has long expressed the need for reinforcements, but his preferred pairing of Casemiro and Fernandes has arguably failed to bring out the club captain’s full potential.
The Guardian reports that United plan to spend money in this month’s transfer window, with former Wolves star Ruben Neves named as a potential target. The Al Hilal midfielder is claimed to be worth £20m and Neves is one of several players linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Carrick usually favored a 4-2-3-1 formation during his time at Middlesbrough and should be able to slot into Fernandes’ preferred attacking role. This leaves Casemiro, Mainu, Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount as senior options in midfield, although young talent Jack Fletcher has also been promoted recently.
Whether Carrick signs a new contract or moves into the club’s youth system, finding the right midfield balance will be crucial if United are to qualify for the Champions League. It’s a problem that his predecessor Amorim was unable to solve, but given his successful career as a defensive midfielder, Carrick should be well equipped to find the perfect solution.
