Manchester United are set to approve Michael Carrick as interim head coach shortly after signing the former midfielder following the departure of Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United’s Michael Carrick is set to be announced as interim head coach until the end of the season. The appointment of Carrick and his coaching team has been agreed in principle and all parties are currently working to finalize the deal.
Confirmation of Carrick’s appointment could be announced later on Tuesday, with Saturday’s Manchester derby likely to be the 44-year-old’s first game as manager. Carrick and his staff are scheduled to have their first training session on Wednesday, with the first-team squad having Tuesday off.
Following face-to-face meetings with CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, Carrick emerged as the frontrunner to steady the ship. Carrick met the pair last Thursday and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke to them on Saturday.

Impressed by Carrick’s vision during these meetings, Berrada and Carrick held further talks on Monday with a view to finalizing a deal for the former Manchester United midfielder.
This included deliberations over the composition of the former Middlesbrough manager’s backroom staff, particularly given the lack of senior coaching following the departure of Ruben Amorim and his Portuguese coaching team, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Carrick’s former Middlesbrough coach Jonathan Woodgate could join the coaching team, while former Manchester United defenders Jonny Evans and Travis Binion could also join the coaching team. According to BBC Sport, former England number two Steve Holland will become Carrick’s assistant head coach.
Darren Fletcher, who has managed United’s last two games, will return to his role with the Under-18s, with Carrick largely staying put.
Carrick was appointed as United manager for three games after Solskjær, who was part of the Norwegian coaching team, was sacked in November 2021. He led United to wins over Villarreal and Arsenal and a draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before departing for pastures new ahead of Ralf Rangnick’s arrival.
Carrick became number one in the Championship in his own right with Middlesbrough and led them to the play-offs in 2022-23.
He was in charge at Teesside for two-and-a-half years, but was sacked in June 2025 after the team failed to reach the Championship play-offs and finished 10th.
