Michael Keane will be suspended for three games after Everton’s appeal against the defender’s red card in the Premier League game against Wolverhampton Wanderers has been rejected.

Referee Thomas Kirk was sent off in the 83rd minute after Keane appeared to pull his opponent’s hair when he exchanged a header with Tolu Arokodea.

Keane scored early in the game to put Everton 1-0 up, before Wolves equalized in the second half with a hard-earned point.

Jack Grealish was sent off in the 90th minute, ending Everton’s battle with nine men, but the Merseyside club have since expressed their displeasure at an unsuccessful appeal against Keane’s red card.

“Everton Football Club is disappointed to report that the appeal against the sacking of manager Michael Keane for Wednesday’s Premier League game against Wolves has been rejected by the FA Committee,” a statement released on Friday read.

“While the three-person panel’s majority decision upholding the dismissal and three-game suspension is a decision we must accept, we are still surprised.

“We appealed in the belief that this incident did not meet the criteria for an act of violence as defined in the regulations and that the act was neither forced nor intentional.

“Our appeal is also lodged in support of Michael Keane, a player who approaches the game to the highest ethical standards and who until Wednesday had never been dismissed for violent conduct in his career.

“We strongly believe that the severity of the three-game suspension is clearly excessive, and we are surprised and disappointed that our appeal on this point was also denied.”

“It wasn’t violent, it wasn’t forced or intentional,” Everton manager David Moyes said shortly after Wolves drew on Wednesday.

Speaking at Friday’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup game against Sunderland, which will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and Discovery Plus, Moyes said he was further taken aback by the decision not to overturn the suspension.

“Very disappointed and very surprised,” he said.

“I’d probably be more angry at the committee that chose to think that was the case. The committee is sitting there, doing it, looking at it, and I have to question three of them – I know three of them are members of the committee, and I’m really surprised they didn’t reverse it in some way.”

“But when I say it’s an act of violence, I just watched the game last night, it’s OK to throw the ball at someone, it’s OK to push someone, pick them up, even if they’re probably seriously injured (referring to the incident with Gabriel Martinelli against Liverpool).

“But if you just accidentally pull someone’s hair a little bit, you’re going to get a three-game suspension, which is very unusual for me.”

Keane’s suspension will begin immediately with Saturday’s FA Cup game against Sunderland and the Premier League game between Aston Villa and Leeds United.
