Manchester United caretaker manager Darren Fletcher explains immediate formation changes for match against Burnley following Ruben Amorim’s departure

Darren Fletcher explained why he opted for a back four during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Burnley on Wednesday, their first game since sacking manager Ruben Amorim.

Amorim favors a 3-4-2-1 system and famously tried to implement that philosophy at Old Trafford. The Portuguese head coach has occasionally opted for a back four, such as in the 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, but has always defaulted back to his preferred formation.

Fletcher took over as interim manager following Amorim’s departure and wasted little time changing the formation to a more traditional back four against Burnley.

Asked why he made the change, Fletcher told the BBC: “That’s what I’ve always played in my career and I feel that’s what I’m comfortable with and what I’m using with the Under-18s.”

“It is synonymous with Manchester United and we felt it was a perfect fit for the players tonight at Burnley.

“If you look at the game in terms of the chances created, it was the right decision. The challenge is that if the players are used to a back five, it will be difficult for them to adapt to a back four. We have to cover more and you can see there are challenges there and we will work on that.”

Although there were newcomers in the dugout, there was something familiar about United’s performance.

United created more than enough chances to win the game comfortably, but recklessness in front of goal and defensive lapses snuffed out another chance that could have put them in the running for a place in the top four.

So while it may have been an honor for Fletcher to lead United from the dugout, the former United midfielder said his biggest feeling after the match was “disappointment”.

“For me, the fact that it’s a draw is a huge disappointment,” Fletcher said. “If you look at the situation in the game, the chances we created, clearances on the goal line, goals canceled, 30 shots and a lot of attacking play.

“We produced more than enough to win the game, so it’s obviously disappointing to only get one point.”

A big plus for Fletcher and United was the performance of Benjamin Sesco.

The summer signing has struggled to adjust to life in the Premier League, but found the back of the net twice in the second half at Turf Moor with two fine finishes to put United 2-1 ahead before Jadon Anthony equalized to share the spoils.

And Fletcher has the chance to improve his form at Burnley, with confirmation he will remain at the post until Sunday’s FA Cup home game against Brighton, which will be broadcast live on TNT Sport and Discovery Plus.

“I’ll be in charge against Brighton at the weekend and that’s the next step as far as I’m concerned,” he added. “If the club asks me to do something, I’m happy to do it, so it’s a great honor to lead the team at Old Trafford.

“All the focus is on recovering from this game and preparing for Brighton.”
