Liverpool’s £125m striker Alexander Isak underwent surgery on an ankle injury after scoring in the 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Isak scored his third goal for Liverpool following his controversial British-record summer move to Anfield, but midway through he was tackled by Micky van de Ven and collapsed for several minutes before being helped by medical staff.
“Alexander Isak has today successfully undergone surgery for the injury he sustained on Saturday,” the club said in a statement.
“The Liverpool striker was injured in an attack on the way to scoring the opening goal against Tottenham Hotspur and had to be substituted.
“As a result of the diagnosis, surgery for the ankle injury, which included a fibula fracture, was completed today.
“Issac’s rehabilitation will continue at the AXA Training Center, but a return date has not yet been determined.”
This is the latest setback in Isak’s early Anfield career, as Liverpool already have Mohamed Salah unavailable for the African Cup of Nations.
Isak, who missed pre-season training due to an extended absence from Newcastle, scored on his debut in the Carbao Cup against Championship side Southampton, but had to wait until the game against West Ham in November to open his Premier League account. He looked more like his old self against the Spurs, but now he’ll be on the sideline.
Meanwhile, Sweden’s fans will be hoping the injury does not dent their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Isaac’s country is in the playoffs with Ukraine, Poland and Albania.
